Insect Problem?

I have read, on another forum which will remain nameless, that many people are experiencing trouble with No-See-Ums at WDW lately, especially at AKL. (they do minimal spraying because of the animals) They are an extremely tiny (hence the name) gnat-like insect that leaves itchy welts, which last longer than misquito bites. They come out after dark, and hang around until dawn. They also like moist areas (like around the pools) They seem to prefer the legs. I intend to wear insect repellent, and wear lightwight pants & socks whenever possible!

Did any recent visitors have any problems?

Strange, since Disney is well-known for its unbelievable mysterious way of repelling insects in an area where insects rule.
Well, I guess it must be hard to mantain this tiny things away from AK where they are attracted by the animals' smells.

Well...they cant use some of the things they use in other parks out of safety for the animals...not to mention there is a LOT more foliage in AK than the other parks...

One night (i think Tuesday) they sprayed for bugs at the French Quarter. We left the room and it smelled awful throughout the resort. It was almost nausiating. We were up early that day (about 6) so maybe they expect people to sleep a while longer and the smell will go away. All I know is that it was bad.

True. However, in many sections of Disney property surrounded by woods or any type of folliage is also insect-free which is really amazing.

I have seen a few of them floating about manily at animal kingdom but also at my friends hotel he has came here with his family and they are staying on I-D at the wydam and they seem to have few fly about

Had em at the Contemporary Wings

During my family's 98-99 holiday trip, we stayed in the Contemporary Wings. When we woke up one morning, there were these gnat like things all over the walls, beds, etc. We informed the cleaning lady and she said that they were coming from Bay Lake. Apparently, we were not the only ones having this problem. Someone came and fumigated our room and........we got our room refunded for that day. We tried to get the whole trip refunded, but they said, "NO!"

....."Yes, E.P.C.O.T. IS an acronym!!!" ----- Me arguing with EPCOT Guest Services

This is kinda a thread drift but, it does have to do with pests and what Disney can and can't do about them.

Has anyone else noticed crow problems at the resorts? When we were at Poly in Dec the crows were just alwful. It really took away from the relaxing feel of the resort and the sky would just turn black with them at times. They would steal people's food and hound people when walking around the resort.

I don't know what Disney can do aobut this, beside encourge people not leave food out and NOT TO FEED ANY BIRDS.

Maybe the follow the grabage around like they do in my neighborhood.

Just wondering.

Feeding the birds is probally the biggest thing that keeps them around so much.

Disney can only do so much to control pests, birds, etc. Some things aren't good for animals, others for humans.

Disney can't really capture birds or kill them or they will get in trouble, kind of like the Discovery Island thing.

when i staye dat the contemporary in december the crows were all over the tower. I did not want to sit on my balcony out of fear of being ________ed on.
Also on my trip in september 2000 I noticed a problem with lovebugs. they are these little black bug a little smaller than a fly. at one point the bus driver had to use the wipers to get all the dead bugs of of the windshield. fortunatly they did not bite but they did like to fly around your face.

The Love Bugs are nasty, but they don't hurt...their "juices" will eat into your auto finish, however. The bugs people are complaining about bite, and leave bad welts and sores on your legs...depending upon your individual reaction to them. Definitely to be guarded against, with either long pants or insect repellent...aparently Avon's Skin-So-Soft works well...I've had good results in the past with Cutter. (in the Carribean)
