Was at EPCOT last night for IllumiNations and the inferno barge was missing from the show. Anyone know what's going on? I hadn't seen any news on issues or refurbs happening with the show.

It does on occasion have technical issues and maybe missing from the show. Hopefully someone can confirm it's back tonight.

I hope it's back tonight--I have relatives down there who are in Epcot today--I really played up Illuminations (of course!) in advising them on their trip!

Was it physically missing from the lagoon? Or was it there and just non-operational during the show?

If it's physically out there and did not go off, it's most likely a one-time failure right before showtime. If it wasn't even brought out onto the water, it's a bit more open as to whether it's a big issue or not.

A few years ago it malfunctioned and did not work, the show started about 5 minutes late, so I'm assuming they were trying to get it working.

Ah, dagnabit. That means my relatives didn't get to see it. I'm sure the rest of their day at Epcot was awesome, but chilly. Thanks for the report!

On the topic of the inferno barge, I felt it prudent to include this video. :)

Just curious, is the video only 1:48 because that's how long it took for the camera to spontaneously combust?

I honestly wouldn't have imagined that any electronics could survive in that environment - that whole thing is one total and complete fireball at a few points during the show!

The camera looks like it was quite a ways down below the action. Perhaps there is a hold or other lower than the deck area in the middle of that barge? I was surprised the lens lasted as long as it did. Making enclosures to protect camcorders is not that big of a deal. Keeping cheap plastic lens from melting isn't....

Great video. Does anybody know if that was all of Chaos?

From what I've heard, they placed the camera under a welding mask. Even then it didn't survive. (My guess is that the video only shows as long as the camera or the mask lasted) Though it does show *most* of Chaos (you can tell where the brief pause is in the middle of the Chaos segment).

Also, while there are safety bunkers on the Earth barge and the four Maxi-Barges where techs can stay during the show, there isn't one on the Inferno Barge. (I also wouldn't be surprised if techs aren't allowed in the Maxi-Barge bunkers until *after* the Inferno Barge segment)

Judging from the pyro cues and just playing the video alongside the soundtrack, that onboard shot of the inferno barge is all of Chaos.

Hopefully they get the inferno barge back online soon. The one good thing about the inferno barge not being in the show is that the laser effects are much more visible (which, in some aspects, are more impressive and artistic than the fire effects).

Check out the laser effects in this video (put it at least on 480p):

A welding helmet is a novel approach considering the environment. They must have replaced the opening with clear glass as the fireworks are the correct color and brightness.

I knew there were bunkers on the Maxi-Barges, but not on the Earth barge. Neat. I wonder how long it takes to get from the control stand into the bunker.

A welding helmet really does not do anything though.

It protects you from sparks, and from frying out your retnas. The fire from the inferno barge is not the right color to burn out your retnas. It may overload the CCD on some cameras, but you can see this particular camera compensate for the change in light.

The welding mask is not going to protect against ambient heat, which is what the inferno barge is throwing off. A better choice would have been to wrap the camera in a pair of bunker pants and add a peice of borocillicate (Pyrex) glass over the lense. Bunker pants (or other firefighters gear) are meant to protect against prolonged elevated temeratures, more so than a welding mask would.

No doubt you are correct about the Pyrex and bunker gear, but I would think an older welding helmet (Older = fiberglass, newer = plastic) would deflect enough heat energy for the short time it was needed. Like I said, novel approach. I assume the odd shaped part of the image at the end of the video was the glass in the hood failing, and not the camera. If it was the camera I don't think you would be able to make out any of the fire. Not that it really matters. I doubt anybody at RCFD would let them borrow their pants... :lookaroun Maybe Boo will drop by to add color cometary...

The bunker on the Earth Globe barge gets used nightly. That's where the driver of the barge hangs out after they've driven to the center of the lagoon and docked it.

There are no bunkers on the Maxi-Barges. The only bunker is on the Earth Globe barge. It is like a small closet, usually 2 people are in there but can fit 3 people.

The inferno barge will be out for a while repairs are being made.
