More than half a century ago, British writer James Hilton wrote a novel entitled Lost Horizon...
A couple of footnotes about the story...
Residents of Shangri-La lived "forever"... in a society where one class lived in quiet scholarly pursuits, attended hand and foot by a serf class, which was also quite happy due to some form of intoxicant.

The drug element was downplayed when Lost Horizon was made into a highly-successful movie in the 40's. Then in 1972, producer Ross Hunter (most famous for "Airport", which later inspired the comic "Airplane!") filmed a pleasant, strange, and not at all successful Lost Horizon with music by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The failure of this effort was perhaps a contributing factor in the demise of the previously-golden Bacharach/David song writing team. You may have heard covers of some of the Lost Horizon songs... Living Together/Growing Together or The World Is A Circle being the most often rerecorded.

Ahhh... the old "echo chamber" at work. I love it when people and journalists just repeat what other people say rather than actually doing some work. Kyle, this isnt a shot at you, rather a shot at the outright lazyness of some of the so-called 'reporters' of Disney info in general.

FYI the echo chamber effect is when enough media outlets simply repeat the same unverified information over and over to the point that it comes true and takes on a life of its own. (Kinda like the whole Jessica Lynch thing.)

One of the new buildings (the bigger of the two) has a sign that says Shangri-La on it. I didn't even really think about what it was until just now.

That is why it becomes key to determine which sources are reliable and which sources are not. Especially when one is reporting from a distance and must rely on second-hand information for everything. In this particular case, the information came from "reputable" media that had access to information not available to others. There are many other times that rumors (while quite entertaining) are not reported, as they are not from reliable sources or validated against other sources. I agree that indiscriminately reporting every rumor that you see/hear/read is neither advisable nor responsible.

I am not sure if you people are calling me irresponsible or not, but I don't think I am. I posted a rumor that appears to be true. The lone post that mentioned Shangri-La a couple days before I posted it did not seem to get much attention, and now a lot more people know about it. I'm afraid I don't see the problem.

The Divinci Code is excellent, by the way. As for The Lost Horizon, I think Disney should send out a reading list to guests a month before their vacations so they can read up on some of the background stories to attractions ;) Maybe they could require a 3-page literary analysis from each party at check in :D

No, my post was a response to a perceived attack from PhotoDave. ("shot at the outright lazyness of some of the so-called 'reporters' of Disney info in general.") As I'm the only "reporter," as it were, that's participating here, at least as far as I know, I took it as a swipe at me.

The Shangri La's were not that bad. They gave us "Leader of the Pack." A great teenage death song.

All this time I though that was an original tune from '80's glam-ed out hair band Twisted Sister!
