This just came across my Twitter feed...user EPCOTMedia just tweeted that France Pavilion CMs told a crowd of people that The film wil be re-edited for March/April. I understand this has been a rumor for some time, perhaps it's finally coming to fruition?

Wish they would turn it to digital.

Yes, I have high hopes for this one going to digital projectors too.

Since it uses six fewer it's a lot more economical to convert than any of the Circle-Vision films.

I have mixed feelings about any actual changes. The score is flawless, and I really enjoy how well it pairs with the current film, but at the same time it's pretty clear we're looking at France of almost 30 years ago, and at least some of those scenes could stand to be updated.

I think if it is simply a few new scenes mixed in with the original film (similar to how O Canada was updated) I think this could be very successful.

I agree that a few scenes should be updated, but changing to a comedy-based script, a la O Canada, wouldn't seem right to me with that classical score. I'd hope for an update/re-edit more like what was done with the China film a few years back.

Digital would actually lower the resolution considerably. A cleaned up film print the proper projection would be much clearer and frankly would look amazing.

I support digital as it eliminates print flaws that happen over time (build up of scratches, dirt etc.) and provides a greater consistency in look where multiple screens are used. HoP has gone digital and it still looks fantastic quality wise.

A restoration along with a re-edit to eliminate the dated bits would be fantastic, especially if it came so soon.

Me too. The china film is still a must do every trip for me.

As for France, they could just show classic French cinema all day and you can just come and go as you please. That's sort of my dream for that theater. I'd love to sit down and watch a Renoir or Truffaut film while munching on something from the boulangerie.

NO NO NO NO I'm not at all suggesting something similar to the Martin Short bits be added to Impressions...Just that in the new O Canada they replaced some of the "obviously filmed in 1981" shots with some "obviously filmed in 2007" shots.

I don't think the original film looks too dated, considering I've never been to France, but I'm sure it's something of a big joke to anyone that has, not the least of which the Cast Members.

Impressions is one of the few must dos for me every trip....I know scary! Last time I was watching it I noticed how NOT out of date it really is. Because France is such a old country if they just did a re-edit and maybe a few fast reshoots they could bring it up to date in a short amount of time! I am all for bringing it into the 21st century, but not making it other then what it is now an amazing attraction!

I'm guessing the film is actually older than most of the CM's that work there!

Digital would actually lower the resolution considerably. A cleaned up film print the proper projection would be much clearer and frankly would look amazing.

Not necessarily, it depends on your definition of "resolution." Some cell phone pictures look better than some photographs shot on 35mm film, and thus give the appearance of better resolution, but of course film resolution is exponentially higher than cell phone cameras. It depends on the master print, which none of us have seen, and whether the digital projectors are done on-the-cheap or are the latest in digital projection technology. A slightly higher resolution celluloid projection with unavoidable film jitter might not appear as good as digital projection that is dead-still. So more important than resolution is really how the end result appears to the audience.

Also, there are a couple different schools of thought on the film vs digital projection front. One popular notion is that movies shot-in/created-in digital, such as Tron Legacy or Toy Story 3, ought to be viewed with digital projection, and movies shot on film, such as the King's Speech, ought to be viewed with a film projection. This way, each looks the most natural in its native format.

To each his own.

The removal of the topless female child in the pier scene is long overdue.

Had this scene been filmed and published in more recent years, it would have undoubtedly caused a pupblic uproar. :zipit:

The most obvious benefit to having the film digitally remastered and shown through digital projectors is that the image quality will no longer degrade from repeated showings.

All of the various films shown throughout Walt Disney World run almost constantly for 8-12 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year. Celluloid wasn't intended to take that kind of abuse, and the cost of producing a new print means they don't get changed often enough. Far more guests see worn, damaged, and dirty showings of films than the ones lucky enough to visit in the first couple of weeks after print change.

But a complete changeover to digital would bring guests a greater degree of consistency in the presentation and Disney would see reduced costs in the long run. It's just the high upfront costs of the digital remastering and multiple projectors needed that's making the changeover happen one theater at a time.

Perhaps if there's talk of a new re-edit it might mean it is also time for France to get the digital changeover as well. But since there's nothing in this current rumor suggesting digital prints or projectors are coming, it really remains to be seen what, if anything, actually happens.

Re-edit means cut the film into little bits, change the music to cheesy cartoon music, put in images of celebrities and get Martin Short to scream at you for half of the movie. Oh, and make it digital so you'll never worry about the quality of the ridges and canyons on the face of celebrities.

I could see this happen. I heard a rumor that Les Chefs de France may be set for an update, soon, so they may be looking to refurbish the entire pavillion.
