Imagineering trailers in position for Soarin' construction at Epcot

While visiting last week, my kids ran down an apparent CM in a suit with a lanyard to trade pins. He was walking away from The Land area. After trading pins, he reached into his pocket and gave them a round needle pin that said "Ride and Show". On reflection, he must have been an imagineer. Don't know what he was doing but I think it all adds up to a change at The Land.

The new Soarin' attraction will be a nice addition to the space that is in-between the two pavilions.:)

By the way, has anyone heard or speculated about what the attraction will be about? It obviously won't be set in California...maybe in Florida? Or even soarin' over Walt Disney World?

Well even though I've never ridden SOC I have seen videos of it on the computer and while all of it was filmed in California they could easily call it Soarin' Over America and I don't think many people would know the difference. Maybe just change the Disneyland fireworks at the end and it would fit perfectly. I kinda wish they could put it next to the American Adventure. To me World Showcase needs a new attraction worse than any other place. But next to the Land will do :animwink:

I feel like I'm in my own little personal midwest blackout again here, but what exactly is the format of this attraction??:veryconfu

I had the impression that it was a coaster but from the comments on "footage" used in the attraction, I am thinking that this may not be the case.

Could someone please elaborate?!

Soarin has you sit in a seat that is lifted off the floor and over a movie screen where you get the feeling you are flying over somplace. There are also effects like smell. Thats pretty much Soarin.

I'm sure someone here has ridden it and can give you a better idea of what it does, but until then I will try to shed a little light on it from what I've seen on video.

It is a simulator-based hang-glider that utilizes a unique ride system that starts with several rows of seats in a showbuilding. After seated, the rows of seats then move forward and upward into a giant (curved??)IMAX screen resulting in the rows of handgliders being above and below each other. Crystal clear images of landscapes are then produced on the screen so it seems like you are really there. Each handglider row moves according to the images and other effects are added such as scents from oranges (the orange smell from Horizons may be making a comeback :) ), and water sprays, etc. to create a realistic "flight". It looks neat and should be a very nice addition.

They are actually planning on using the ride video from Soarin' Over California on the EPCOT version for the first couple of years...they may - or may not - be getting a new ride film specifically for Florida's version after that.

The seats move slightly, not a whole lot. When you are diving down the seats tip slightly forward. When you make a turn they barely tip to the side. There is cold fresh wind blowing across you. The images are nice but I didn't think they were crystal clear.
The best part is the lift off and landing. This is a very pleasant ride and many consider it an E style attraction. I think of it as a really nice D.
