My advice would be don't visit in September.
Don't bother with a dining plan... And we found a 3 day hopper plenty.

LOL, I think Suller said that because Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain go down for Halloween overlays. Mansion is down for two weeks and Space is down for 2-3 days. Something to think about.

Space Mountain was closed for at least 3 days for its Halloween overlay last week.

The first week in September is usually safe but I'm not sure if Halloween starts early this year at the parks because the HM was closed out entire stay.

Thats what I'm hearing as well...to not even bother with a DL hotel/resort and just stay at one of the others. Is a "Good Neighbor Hotel/Resort" recommended? Or should we just look at some of the cheaper ones? We dont really care about the room/hotel as long as it's clean!!

I stayed at the Ayres Inn in early September. It is 3 miles from Disneyland but almost better than you are out of the way of the more busy areas. I checked the prices for HOJO and Desert Inn and such and Ayres was so much better, although I got a heck of a deal too. The rooms are very nice and clean. There is an outdoor pool and hot tub and workout room. There is also breakfast served every morning. I am talking about a "real" breakfast. Pancakes, sausage, hashbrowns, fruit, cereal, toast, etc. That is one less meal to drop money on. We ate breakfast every morning. Plus you are very close to the highway 5 which gets you to L.A. But more importantly you'll be at Disneyland in 5 minutes.
