I was working with the USDA and Sea Grant with Dr. Michael Peek doing beach grass assessments and finding the phenotype that was the most resistant to Jersey since we use a Massachusetts variety even though we have our own. If you google it there is a lot of info on it and a few NJ12 and NBC news links to some interviews we have done.
Everything was rolling then Sandy happened....we lost a lot of funding because apparently people know what is best for the shore and their homes based on what the money in their pocket has to say and not what scientific facts point to...the project is still going, I was just the oldest postbach on the project and had done a significant portion of the work to the point where the rest was simple. It didn't really make sense for me to stick around while people combusted plant samples for composition.
I'm trying to get NJIT to give me funding for research into heat island effects on phenotypic plasticity, and/or identifying phenotypes that correlate with specific CO2, temperature, and light levels (in a climate change kind of way even though I use climate change with a grain of salt.
Newark used to be a jungle even when I got my first degree there over 10 years ago...I mean it's improved, but at the end of the day it's still Newark...the bottom line is, my fiancee makes a boat-load of money so we're trying to get my science done up here so we don't have to walk away from what she makes...but if science causes us to relocate, than move we shall...
