I recall some are but very very quietly. You only really hear them if you know what to listen for.

Here's Epcots 30th RoE show, with audio direct from the show system. Listen from the 26 minute mark and you'll hear a lot more effects. Dolphins for sea, jungle noises and birds for foliage, elephants for animals, a watefall and the like. Like has been mentioned above these are original effects but are more prominent now.

I read that Wikipedia page and lot of things are outdated and I don't where they got that audio information but it needs some serious correction and get the correct info in there.

It's funny, I live in Orlando and have seen the show more times than I can count; just last week I saw the show from Italy and heard these sound effects for the first time.
Regardless if they've always been there or not, they're definitely more prominent now than before. Kind of distracting, I thought something had gone wrong at first.

As much as I love ROE I think they should update or replace the show. I really hope they don't replace ROE with WoC. World of Color is an amazing show using some great tech that is just visually spectacular but it is basically nothing more than a very well done collage of Disney Animation mostly mated to sound clips from existing Disney music, but it takes a lot of imagination to think it has a story of its own. Now if they updated ROE with some of the WoC tech, especially the laser like lighting, that would be fantastic.

I agree that RoE is pretty old and, as much as I love it and don't want it to, it probably should be changed. But I wouldn't say it's "dated" at all. The technology of the globe still amazes me, the music is breathtaking, and the story is inspiring. World of Color is amazing, no doubt, but it's still just projections of cartoons on water, which is a huge chunk of Fantasmic too. RoE is WAY more than that.

To be fair, I haven't seen WoC in person yet, and I'm not as emotionally attached to the Disney movies as I am the parks, but I just can't imagine it being "better" than Illuminations.

I said in my DLR trip report that after seeing WOC for the first time I preferred it to ROE and still do. But I don't dislike ROE, it's just that might need to be replaced.
