Iger announced in yesterday’s earnings call that the company will be making Zootopia 2, Frozen 3, and Toy Story 5. If this comes to pass, what are your thoughts?

Personally, I loved Zootopia, so I would be excited for a sequel. I felt like Frozen 2 was a narrative mess, and that they didn’t have a story to tell, so I’d be interested in where they could take this overall story. With Elsa abdicating her throne, I’m not quite sure what they would do with that story. Even Anna and Kristoff didn’t have much to do in that one. Definitely not sure how I feel about TS5 as the first three movies were incredible and told a perfect trilogy and TS4 was unnecessary. Now if they want to retcon TS4 and make Woody realize he never should have left, then I am listening.

What are your thoughts? Should DIS continue to tell stories of these beloved characters or is this just an unnecessary cash grab? Or something different altogether?

No, they shouldn't, but they will. The reason is simple- they're risk averse. Few of their recent animated films have been both well received and financially successful, even before the pandemic. The one-two punch of box office bombs Lightyear and Strange World (the latter being a historic disaster) have probably killed their appetite for original stories for now.

I just hope Disney doesn't sink into endless sequel territory. Long term, this will probably kill the brand.

Zootopia is fine and so is frozen. I expected both to get sequels sooner rather than later. But toy story, after the last 2, especially 4, I have no interest in seeing it. Maybe they can salvage it by the toys coming back together and reuniting with Andy so he can give them to his kid. The way it should have gone in the first place.

Toy Story 5 has no reason to exist. I also think he franchise get more and more depressing the more they hammer in how the toys will never die and will always be abandoned.

Zootopia 2 could be interesting, and I'd like to see Nick and Judy get in a relationship. However, I wonder whether the film will be as overtly political as the first one was. Some people have criticized Zootopia as "copaganda." The conversation around race and policing has greatly evolved since 2016 and I too wonder how Zootopia 2 will address this. There is potential for the sequel to be VERY controversial, among both left and right leaning people.

I'm not saying a Zootopia sequel can't be good. It definitely can. But I think it's a bigger can of worms than one might think. I think we are much, much more polarized as a society than we were in the spring of 2016.

Frozen III could work if the focus is on Elsa. I feel like there really isn't much more they could do with Anna, Kristoff or Olaf. I'd like to see Elsa face off against a villain. Maybe a villain with fire powers?

I'd also like to see Elsa get a girlfriend, but after the Lightyear/Strange World controversy I wouldn't be surprised if Disney backs away from LGBTQ representation for a few years. Bob Iger said he'd give creatives more freedom, but would he really risk what it could do to the profitability of the Frozen franchise?

If I was stuck in a movie theater for hours, and I had to choose between these movies to entertain myself, I would briefly consider Zootopia 2, but ultimately opt to just sit on a bench with popcorn and a big gulp instead.

(Don't want to watch them for "free" either.)

I’m worried Disney will never do original stories (not even adaptations) anymore after this announcement.
It's a shame because Strange World is the only recent original Disney movie I thought had severe flaws. Soul, Luca, Turning Red, Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto — all original stories — were pretty good movies that were unfortunate victims of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I kinda always felt like the live action remakes were equivalent to the direct-to-video sequels.

I could see that. But thanks to China's theater count and thus the reason the live action remakes exist to familiarize China with properties sincce they don't have the nostalgia, they made a lot of dough.

The well is definitely dry for Iger's reign though. He sequels(normal in balance) remakes and reboots his own success now.

It does not sound like letting storytellers lead the way with all the cuts going on to me.

Have you heard of "Wish"?
I think that is the website Disney orders their rethemed from.

But seriously, is there more than one original film in the works?

And I thought they were going a direction for that where this is the origin story of the star all Disney characters have wished on.

Funny that Wish was majorly produced in Chapek's time.

Apparently Wish had been in the works before Chapek's time. I remember hearing some hints of that film's existences for a few years now.

Well in a general sense yes, but many films are. You can say Frozen had been in the works since the 70s with how Disney was going to tackle the snow queen story.

But the actual production was under Bobby C.

I 100% agree and the majority of those other movies would of been successful if covid never happened and we would be having completely different conversations

Terrible all around. TWDC has run out of ideas. There was once a time where Disney theatrical sequels were rare or unheard of. Now it's par for the course.

Toy Story wrapped up perfectly with 3. TS4 wasn't as good as the others, but at least decent; however, it also ended well enough to put an end to the franchise. Now they're going to drag it out again. What's next? Andy has kids and Woody tries to make his way back to Andy? Or maybe they just make an in between film with them going on adventures in all of those years between TS2 & TS3. Meh.

Movies that came at a similar time did much better in theatrical box office as Encanto. So I don't think pandemic turnout applies much to that one's theatrical run.
