If your chicken had a "sell by Oct. 27" on it, would you use it on the 28th?

I've used salad dressing that's "expired" a year ago. No problems. Chicken likely a different story.

Tonight, I had lamb chops which were well inside their "sell by/use by" dates, considering I bought them last week, popped them in the freezer, and defrosted them this morning. I had to share them with the one of my three cats who cannot resist lamb.

True story...at a friend's house one evening about a year ago and she asked what dressing we would like with the salad. I asked if she had any thousand island. After jostling around the cabinet she handed me a bottle and it had expired 10 years ago. We had a good laugh about that one, then found some more old stuff and threw it all out. I always check dates on bottles!

Ha, I have a similar one--a year ago July (2012), I had to travel to Ireland for my aunt's funeral, dad's oldest sister. I was staying with my aunt and her children (my cousins), who live much of the year in England, and we girls were rummaging through the pantry and discovered a jar of spaghetti sauce that had expired in 2006...I said, ew Aunt Rita, throw this out. Needless to say, she agreed. In October of last year, had to go back again because dad's oldest brother passed, and found that same jar of sauce in Aunt Rita's pantry!! We took matters in hand and tossed the sauce.

Some things I'll chance, others, no way. LOL

A story about expired stuff since we are starting to share. A few years ago during a Christmas get-together, my uncle got my dad a beer, and he drank some. He said it tasted a little funny, but not bad, and he looked at the expiration date, and it was like a year old. Turns out they bought it for a camping trip the prior year. So now whenever we host the get-together, we offer the expired beer that's sitting in the fridge in our garage. :p

Oh, and my dad continued to drink the beer. :p He never got sick.

Siobhan, your story reminds me of visiting my MIL in England. We usually go for Christmas and she cooks a turkey. She does not keep it in the fridge for storage. She keeps it in the oven--for like 4 days and makes turkey sandwiches, turkey curry, etc. My husband eats it, too! Even when I was not a vegetarian, I would not touch it. Nobody gets sick, either. I don't know how they do it, but it seriously turns my stomach. :depressed:

Okay here's my expired food story. My mom has an upright freezer in her basement and every year we buy a side of beef for the winter. She was rearranging what little was in the freezer to make space and using the top of my dad's tool chest, which is beside the freezer, to put stuff on while organizing the frozen goods. Just short of a week later she calls to tell me there's a bad smell coming from around the freezer area but all the frozen goods taken out went back in so she couldn't figure it out. I'm thinking great, maybe there's a deceased mouse or mole. (We live in the country.) :hungover: I went down in the basement, major P.U. going on, moved the tool chest.....and when she was organizing some ziplocked chicken breast had fallen behind. :depressed:

@luv That's when chicken smells bad!

It wouldn't have hurt him anyway. It just might change the flavor a little. I had a six pack of Schlitz in my frig. for over 7 years. No, I don't drink much. I finally got rid of it when my cousin stopped by for a visit. It helped that he was an alcoholic so he probably would have consumed it it had been lighter fluid. He never complained about it at all. He did pass away eventually, but that was 20 years later, so I doubt that had anything to do with it.

I don't think it matters much with Schlitz.

Now can the cat have some?
I was actually wondering about that. I think I can have the leftovers tonight, but then I thought, "Well, it's been another day, maybe I shouldn't..." and decided that since it's been cooked, I can get another day out of it...but should I give some to the cat? Probably not, lol.

I'm willing to risk my health and life, but since she cannot make an informed decision and has to rely on me, it's best to protect her.

This is, of course, the animal who will eat wild mice and lizards, if they happen to come her way. Not like she's very discriminating when given the choice, lol.
