If you could visit the parks in history...when?

Some serious thinking to do here...

Since it can be anytime in history, maybe as MK was under construction. Would love to be able to walk around with the thinkologists and dreamers and listen to them discussing how construction was going, and seeing the park as the magic was being incorporated into the mortar.

But if I was to have an 'Our Town' moment or two...

Back in 1983 (I think) my best friend and I went to visit my great-grandmother who lived in Bradenton. We drove up to WDW and stayed overnight - off site. What I wouldn't give to be able to spend another day with her around that time. I don't remember a whole lot from that trip, except that my friend bought a souvenir at MK as we left for the day and forgot his wallet at the stand. Sadly, wallet was never seen again and for a teen to have lost what little money he had was a bummer was to end our trip....

Or maybe I would pick March of 1996. I had given my parents a Disney cruise and three day park visit for Christmas and then decided to take my niece and nephew for a week for their gift. My sister in law and brother decided shortly after that they wanted to join us...so it was the whole family together for a few days. We took a picture at the stone bench at the entrance to Frontierland [now gone - where the bridge is]. This would be our last picture together, and the last vacation, as my father died suddenly one week later. So, if I could choose the one day to go back to, maybe it would be this one and try to make the day last as long as I could.

Personally I would like to go back to the time before there were any parks. I would have loved to have been able to walk the property with Walt on one of the few times he was here. The only downside is that I would have to be the one to tell him that his "Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" isn't what he had planned.

In 1989 when MGM and the GF were just opening. It was a good mix of new and classic at that time. All of the original Epcot attractions were still in full swing, and River Country and Discovery Island were open. You could swim in the Seven Seas Lagoon. But must importantly the cost of going to the parks and dinning in the world was very reasonable. You didn't have to give up a month or two salary to go on vacation. Also, the parks were at a much more manageable crowd level than today.

I know this is in the Disney section, but...

Universal Studios in 1990. Unlike the Disney parks, A TON has changed over there, to the degree of it not even being the same place from when it first opened. Would love to ride JAWS, BTTF, Kong, Earthquake, Ghostbusters, etc. again!

Wow, what a profound memory! It was lucky that the timing happened as it did where you were all able to be together before he passed. Sad that the bench is gone though since you have such a memory attached to it.

Funny...in two pages I see zero love for the current era. Clearly TDO is making decisions not in touch with the enthusiasts but I know that we are in the minority as compared to the cross section of society that does visit the parks. I just have to wonder what may happen when the DVC is built out and the cash cow dries up.

My first trip to WDW was June of 1990 and it came and went so fast we missed so much. I would love to be able to go back to when each of the parks opened. But the one thing I have noticed in many of the post was how CLEAN and how Great the services were in the 1990's. I tell people constantly they wouldn't believe how much cleaner and better things were prior to 911.
I'm afraid I am going to have to disagree with you there. Remember that I have only gone as an adult so my mind is not cluttered with exaggerated visions seen through the eyes of a child. My absolute worst experiences with cleanliness and clutter were in the 90's. Bad smells, rancid condiments and more were what I remember most about that time.

Since becoming more active on boards like this one and reading constantly about how messy the place is now compared to then, I started looking real hard when I arrived. Know what, the place has always been spotless in recent years in spite of having an influx of some of the sloppiest, most entitled guests that the world has to offer. I've seen people walk by a trash can, with another in clear sight and drop trash on the ground between the two. I stopped and picked it up and threw it in the trash can because I believe that "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem"!

I'll let you in on a little secret that most of you, I'm sure, have never thought of. It may seem that things get picked up a lot slower now then they did back then and there was a reason. Back when people smoked, legally, wherever they wanted, Disney had a veritable army of people with brooms and handled dust pans posted everywhere. The moment a cigarette dropped they came out of the woodwork and swept them up along with whatever else was on the ground. We now have cleaner air, but it takes longer to get those other slob induced items picked up. Still, I hardly ever see anything very dirty. Also a lot of what we see as dirty is merely 40 years worth of aging. It's not a new park anymore.

Now is the time. Now is the best time.
Won't go that far either. In terms of creativity, it is no where near the best time. But somethings are better now then they were back then, just not the things that count the most.

Through a small bit of research I've found my perfect (though tiny) window of time in December of 1995. At that time EPCOT was running Horizons, the original Universe of Energy and Journey Into Imagination, World of Motion, and the Irons version of Spaceship Earth.

For me the tough part was combining the greatest number of the original Future World attractions with the Irons version of Spaceship Earth. Even still a few other originals had already been updated or replaced, like Communicore, and the entire list of attractions in The Land, but also offers a fully operational Wonders of Life and Living Seas, and a mostly untouched World Showcase.

1989. A beautifully developed Magic Kingdom, Epcot full of Horizons, World of Motion, Imagination, The Living Seas, The Land, Wonders of Life, and finally the sparkling new MGM Studios in it's glory days, with a REAL Backlot Tour.

...b...but then how do you know the lyrics to 'Now Is The Time'? Do you remember it from your one time as a young child? The song's been gone forever!

I was born in 85 myself and oddly remember it too..... ....Disney space time wormhole?

( I think universal Orlando realized a few years back we would all go back in time and go back to Disney making the mouse even stronger, hence back the future was destroyed for the Simpsons)

BTTF was an okay ride. The Simpsons is awesome and remains one of of my favorite rides in all of Orlando.

Born in 1985...sometimes this board makes me feel o-l-d old.

I'd probably go back to June 1998 - the first time I visited Disney World. I was only 6 so I can't remember a whole lot, but I do remember turning on the TV in our hotel room and watching the 'Zip-a-dee-doo-dah' Disney information loop (pre-Stacey) and just being so excited that I was only 5 minutes away from such an amazing place. It still get excited when I hear the 'Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip-for-today' tune! :D
