idea: retheme Soarin'

Tweaking Soarin' is probably dead last on TDO's list, since everyone and their grandma seems pleased as punch with it already. My own gripe with Soarin' is that it's really Soarin' over California, which has very little to do with Epcot or The Land more specifically. This is part of my larger gripe that FW has more or less come apart at the seams, theme-wise -- how it's been Nemoized, in other words.

My idea is to change the film to a tour of different crops around the world. The scenery would be beautiful. Immense wheat fields etc. are pleasantly photogenic, and crops that grow in the mountains -- tea* for example -- are flat-out spectacular. Think of it -- oranges, apples, wheat, corn, rice, soybeans, tea, coffee, chocolate.

The pre-show could be integral in informing the audience about what they were about to see (not just a list of raw place names like they have now, which is worthless).

Why bother with this?
- it would tie in with The Land clearly
- it would be more in the educational spirit of the original Epcot
- it would be *actually informative* as many people would be surprised to see where some of their food comes from
- it would be WDW-specific and add value to a WDW vacation (as opposed to one of the other parks)

It wouldn't be cheap, but the (unique) theater and seats are already in place, so it would cost much less than doing it from scratch.

Of course, it ain't broke, so they ain't gonna fix it. Just an idea.

Rumors for a while have been that a new film was to be made. Either it was soaring over the world or the USA.

Those both sound good. Personally I'd vote for world over US, since there's already the AA in WS.

I wonder how much a new film and ride program for Soarin' would cost, and where it stands on their priority list. For what it's worth, I would put a Soarin' repurpose after JII, WoL, SSE, and UoE, to name a few. :^)

Just my 2 cents, but I'd think that a new film would be the quickest & easiest & cheapest 'refurb' that WDW could do at this point. They don't need to apply for permits. They don't need to demo an existing building or build a new one. They don't have to re-engineer the seating or lift mechanism. All they have to do is record a new film.

I know, easier said than done right. :D

There would be a cost associated with reprogramming the seat movements too, and tweaking them till they're just right. I'm guessing that would cost a lot less than the filmmaking (one tenth, let's say), but...just a guess.

Excellent points both Grizz & Cap and I agree. Seems like these few things & low cost would be the motivation Disney needs for a new film. I'll bet it cost more to tear up Fantasy Land, lol.

I would of much rather seen them invest that money into a e ticket like a Tron adventure or fire mountain.

I would guess though that since fast passes are normally gone within hours of park opening that it will be a long long time before anything is changes.

I say Soarin over the world would work better. Except you fly over Earth's greatest natural wonders like the Grand Canyon, Niagra Falls, the rain forrest, Saharah desert, etc. It would tie-in the Land's conservation theme greatly and be spectacular as well.

There was talk a while back that a Soarin' All Over The World was in the can and ready to debut at DLP. If you do a search then you'll find some of the older threads about Soarin' all over the world.

You can soar over whatever you want to for me...but please make it seamless.....the cuts between scenes totally destroy the effect !

Exactly!! :sohappy: That, and the fact that when you first walk into the theater, you see this big giant movie screen. They could have hidden that from view until the attraction started and that would have created a much better illusion. Simpsons does that, as did Back to the Future.

This sounds like a great idea. You should be an imagineer...or at least an "ideas" guy.

While rumors of a new Soarin' film seem awesome...I personally would love to see it over all of the Epcot countries and finishing over Illuminations...it's very difficult for this to be considered any time soon for a couple reasons...

For about five and a half years now, Soarin' sees an average wait of about an hour from park open to close every single day of the year, making it hard for there to be any refurb to be easily planned out. Also, many of the images you see in Soarin' are very unique to the film, and can most likely never be shot by anyone else again. I'm sure it took Disney a lot of time and money to gain all of the permits and clearance to take film crews through the many areas they went through. For example, the Thunderbird squadron you see in the Anza-Borrego scene were flying together for the last time together. Ultimately it's a film that will be around for many years to come for now.
