Yes, I do drink diet coke, maybe a couple a day. I didn't know that it was so different, it is a possibility. I certainly prefer 'our' coke!

You're probably sensitive to the aspartame in the diet coke (it's banned here in the uk). You should try to avoid soda on your next trip and see if you feel better. The water you'd get in restaurants to drink and that is used for ice is filtered tap water. It really shouldn't be causing you any issues.

In answer to Tam's original question...

I'm fairly sure the ice machines use the local treated water supply and have filters on the machine itself. How often the filters are changed/cleaned would be the biggest issue for your tummy and I don't know the answer.

After 16 years in the Navy, my tummy has no concept of being upset by anything that is publicly consumable...

The thing is being ex Air Force Im only used to the finer things in life.

Could well be that then, I'm definately going to give it a miss next year. Oh, but what will I put in my rum?

If you look at the ingredients of most diet drinks in the uk, you will find they contain aspartame.

Not banned, just labelling rules:

In the UK, foods that contain aspartame are legally required by the country's Food Standards Agency to list the substance among the product's ingredients and carry the warning "Contains a source of phenylalanine" – this is usually at the foot of the list of ingredients. Manufacturers are also required to print '"with sweetener(s)" on the label close to the main product name' on foods that contain "sweeteners such as aspartame" or "with sugar and sweetener(s)" on "foods that contain both sugar and sweetener".

I stand corrected, thanks guys. :)

Wishful thinking?

I'd like to see it banned, along with any artificial sweeteners added to drinks that have horrible after-taste, questionable potentially carcinogenic content or otherwise might kill whomever is ordering it alongside their triple-beef cheeseburgers dripping with grease in order to watch their weight...

even the sodas use filtered tap water that is added to the syrup and fizz. most ice is also from filtered tap water. not just Disney but also anywhere you get a cup of soda.

I have wondered about this too. Every single trip I have to Florida I get an upset tum. I don't eat or drink excessively so I figure it must be the water although I always have bottled water to drink. Just leaves teeth cleaning and ice. I got through a whole packet of Immodium this year  soz, TMI!

Are you sure it isn't cupcake and margarita overload?

I think the tap water at Disney is terrible. I recently purchased a portable reverse osmosis system that I pack with us and use. I have a collapsible 1 gallon water jug that I store the water in. Makes for much better coffee and drinking water. The jug fits nicely in the small refrigerators in the resorts.

I cant remember but the ice that is used has holes in them witch would indicate that they are filtered. Don't quote me on it.

Huh?

That just indicates the type of machine used to make the ice (water is frozen around a chilled tube)

However, it is pretty safe to say that all machine made ice is filtered (if the water is not filtered, the machines get all hosed up)

I would think it much more likely that your stomach issues are caused by a difference in your diet (both food and beverages) combined with extra exercise in the Florida humidity than by drinking tap water, or by having ice made from it.

And maybe a dozen or so rides thrown in!! I take your point!
