I wonder if this will change any procedures.

The only rides in WDW i could possibly see not letting bags onto rides would be Rockin Roller Coaster and Everest. Even then, your legs basically keep it in the car

I would imagine it will change the rules for California Screamin' but beyond that I think they'll look into the possibilities of a similar event happening on each ride and go from there. IMO.

It doesn't actually say the backpack fell from the ride vehicle, it just says a backpack fell onto the track...

I can only think of a few spots where it could happen, but it's possible it fell from somewhere along the load platform or where the track goes under the walkway just before launch [the latter would require more of a 'thrown' than a 'fell']. That might cause an E-stop, which would mean evacing from the ride.

I've never even been to California so I have no clue about the ride layout. Naturally, the first thing that comes to mind is when the ride turns upside-down but then centrifugal force could be argued. Monty, I noticed the article didn't say the backpack came from the ride car itself so the thought that some goofball tossed it from some other location crossed my mind. In the past I've taken note on how strict some parks are and not so strict Disney is about keeping bags with you on rides like RnRC, Everest, etc. It's been a few years but parks that load and unload at the same place can have guests leave bags on the platform and retrieve when they return. No clue if California Screamin is configured that way but I know RnRC & Everest are not. I guess the alternative for attractions like that would be the locker system.

Losing bags during rides has never been an issue for us (we put a leg thru a strap and hold it still with our knees). Standing up while our log was moving on Splash Mountain was never a problem for us either yet now there are lap bars there. I would really hate for this incident to influence procedural changes for these rides in the future. Ya know?

The big question is...how often does this happen. Since this is the first time I've heard of a backpack dropping onto the tracks, I don't think that there will be much of a change in policy. Now if it were happening once a week, I'd say it would be time for a change.

It "fell out" (I think it's near impossible for a backpack to simply fall out during this ride) during the ride, not exactly sure where. The contents of the backpack were scattered everywhere.

And it only takes one person's stupid mistake to ruin everything for everyone else. Disney is all about safety. They're not going to want to go through this whole process again. I can see them adding cubbies in the station to put backpacks in.
