My dad made the mistake of buying me an exclusive pin on a Disney Cruise we went on in 2000. I have been hooked ever since. I say he made a mistake because when he bought it for me he promised to buy me one for every day we spend in Disney together. I think we've been back almost every year since...

So a few years ago I was visiting with my DCA CM brother when a pin-trading yahoo, with about a hundred pins all over his hat and vest, shoved his way between my brother and me and yelled in my brother's face "TRADE!!!" My brother was cool, letting the yahoo look over the choices. He didn't see anything he wanted, so he just left - no thanks, no "sorry about that", nothing. My brother said that sadly this happens quite often.

I was until I realised people were buying cheap packs of counterfeit pins on eBay and trading them for expensive genuine pins from unsuspecting guests. Completely made me paranoid and haven't traded since. I just buy the pins I like from the stores and keep them.

Do not buy cheap pin packs online and then trade them. They are FAKE!

And it kind of seems like cheating, doesn't it?

Perhaps have your mom join the "Disney Pin Trading" Facebook group, you can trade across the world with different people. Also, have her watch out, many pins on Cast Members are fakes due to people buying pins on eBay (which like 99% of pins on there are fake) to only trade them in the parks and sell the real one to make a profit. You can find many tutorials on YouTube on how to spot fake pins.

You do realize most of the CM lanyard pins are fake as well? This is because Disney never stopped it when they could have.

My sister-in-law is the queen of collecting pins.. her living room is literally FLOOR TO CEILING of felt boards filled with pins. She made four of the boards herself.. cutouts of the castle for MK, Tree of Life for AK, sorcerers hat for HS & the sphere for Epcot. It's really quite impressive. (My husband says he feels like he's in a Disney gift shop anytime he's there:D) I never got into pins myself.. I have a few I picked up my last trip (2007) a Tinkerbell, an Ariel & a Winnie the Pooh & friends. Going to pick up some more when we head down in October!
