Many years back on the families first trip (early 90's) I remember us driving along going out to the space coast and you could see plenty on the sides of the road... Now doesn't seem like so much (or maybe as a teen it seemed like more than it was)

I do live in central Florida and have never seen one outside of a zoo-like environment! People up north ask about it all the time and I'm always like, "I've yet to see one..."

Finally did! I wonder if Disney will keep it, relocate it or send it to Gatorland when (if) they find it.

I see the occasional deer on Osceola Parkway at night.

That is crazy youve never seen one in the wild. I literally dont go 2 weeks without seeing one.

When i was a child my family camped at fort wilderness almost every month. There were always alligators around. There was even a young boy killed while feeding ducks near one of the canals while we were there. That was probably 25 years ago but I'm sure they are still lurking around.

I live in South Fl and you can see them everyone once in a while. They are American Alligators. They are not dangerous as long as you leave them alone and DON'T FEED THEM. They have a natural fear of humans but if you feed them they will loose that fear and next time they see a human they expect to be feed and they get angry if their expectations are not met.

Tourists and non natives think its cool to feed Gators. In turn the Gator associates human scent with food. Its unfortunate. Happened at a boat ramp in Lake County on the Dead River a few years ago as well.

Its most likely a gator, as american crocs are normally found in southern florida and even then are more rare in that area compaared to gators. However, many of the lakes in central/northern florida are brackish enough that the american croc could survive in. Obviously disney as animal experts on staff to move these to non guest areas of the property if they feel that the guest are threatened or off property. If there was a croc on the property then disney's options would be even more limited because the american croc is considered threatened by the united states fish and wildlife service (use to be endangered), but being threatened still protects it under the endangered species act.

haha I meant that seeing a gator in FL is as common as seeing a deer up north. No flesh-eating white tail up by you?! :)

Giggle. Nope but they will take a banana right from your hand in our micro-urban town. At this time of the year when their baby Bambi's are being born white tails will rear up and go Muhammad Ali on your head.

I have more fear of these nut cases......

I live in Lakeland and though I don't see them as much as I used to when I was a kid (honestly, I'm almost always inside these days unless i'm at disney), but I've never really seen any in Orlando though. Lakeland has been notorious for gators just....showing up in peoples' homes though.

You're correct that a young boy was bitten by a gator at FW but he wasn't killed. He received non life threatening bites to his leg. But yeah, it can happen anywhere.

An FYI - most nuisance alligators that are trapped in Florida are destroyed. Most of this work is done by private trappers and selling the meat and hide is how they make their money. I don't know if this is true on Disney property but I would imagine it is.

I keep meaning to post this thread and forgetting. I've heard other people have seen them at WDW and was bummed because I never did. But I finally saw one in the big water in the AK! Didn't see his whole body, just his head. At first, I wasn't sure if it was a croc head or a stick that was floating up and then sinking. But it turned out to be a croc head!!

I was so excited. Finally.

Might have been a gator. I never can remember the difference. Croc sounds cooler.

So, where have you all seen your crocs?? (Besides Gatorland, no cheating!). :D

In my backyard. :)
