I REALLY should be happy right now....

But my stomach is in my feet...

I couple weeks ago, my wife and I discussed the possiblilty that we wouldn't go to WDW this summer as originally planned due to financial issues. This would mean no trip this year.

However...

An opportunity has come up for us to go at a much lower price. How? The HS where she teaches needs another chaperone for their choir trip to WDW. She can go for free! I can go too, and even if I paid for myself compleltely, it would be a Godsend. We would be able to go even though we thought we wouldn't.

My problem....FLYING .:brick: :hurl: :brick: :hurl:

I am one of the worst flyers in existence. Before each flight I tense up hours in advance with anticipation. The whole time on the plane I am white knuckled in my seat. I DO NOT MOVE. Only after the plane is on the ground and slowing down do I relax.

I told my wife I will go, I'd be stupid otherwise. So, now in anticipation, I'll be excited to visit Mickey, but dreading the trip at the same time.

Just thought I'd share my issues with my WDWMagic friends.

So, YAY I'm going!!!:sohappy: :sohappy:

and

Oh NO! I'm flying!!!:hurl: :hurl:

I feel your pain. Trip to Disney vs flying.

I'm the same way...I get on the plane & fasten the seat belt. DO NOT talk to me or look at me until the plane has come to a complete stop where ever it is we are going. :o

For a week before our trip I have trouble sleeping & my stomach doesn't work quite right. :lookaroun

Please talk to your doctor...a mild tranquilizer for the flights will help bigtime. I'm still belted into my seat & I don't want to talk but at least I can relax.

We will be flying down for Spring Break...the nerves will kick in the beginning of March.

Is this a choir only trip? Because when my hs went, we had choir, band, and colorguard. Therefore there was A LOT of equipment that couldnt go on the plane. (especially drums) A couple of parents volunteered to drive a ryder truck (from CT) with all the extra equipment.
They left a day ahead of us and it was definately a godsend for us because how else would we get the band's stuff down there? If the band is going or there is equipment that cant go on the plane why dont you volunteer to drive it down there? that way you dont have to fly!

just a suggestion

Hey there DI.

Bring something along with you that'll take your mind off of it. For the first 10-15 minutes during/after liftoff you'll be panicking but if you bring something (aka...GameBoy) hehe...it does help because your mind will be off the fear and into the game.

Oh, I am going to go...it's WDW. How could I not?

I'm definitly going to look into some tranquilizers and hope for the best.

Tigsmom:

We're going down the Wednesday after Easter, Spring break for HS...maybe we'll run into each other! I'll get queasy about a week before though, hope the chocolate on Easter soothes my nerves a bit! :D

AliciaLuvzDizne:

It's a choir only trip, the marching band & color guard went to WDW over New Year's 2000/2001 (i.e. my last flight). Unfortunately, the driving wasn't an option then either. All of our drums and other equipment was brought on a plane as luggage and we rented pit equipment from someone in the Orlando area.

I think part of my issue is I haven't flown post-911. I know that I should feel safe etc. etc. but I cannot help myself. Part of my problem is that I work out of a news room of a local new radio station, so I hear all of the stupid little things that happen and I am continuously reminded of security and terror.

I have always feared flying, let's just say it hasn't gotten any better.

And honestly, if I could be knocked out before and revived after the flight like Mr. T, I'd be one happy Disney freak.

wow all that stuff on a plane

well dont think about the flight from now until you leave...think about mickey and the castle and mission space and before you know it, it'll be time to get on the plane and you wont have an ulcer. then, just keep yourself busy being a chapperone. Ya know...make sure no one is playing spin the bottle in the aisle *Hey back in HS we played it on the bus...and BELIEVE ME some of the people playing did NOT restrict themselves to kissing* hehe

I think the solution is simple. . . Take some Dramamine with a couple for Crown and Cokes. Not that I condone such behavior. I usually get situated in my seat and start in on my book.

We are debating the fly vs drive in November. We like the idea of having our own vehicle for convinience while there and for the extra room coming back home (souveniers).

In the UK there are courses held at airports for people terrified of flying. I saw a documentary about them a few years ago and the course seemed to do the trick. There was only one person who bottled out, but I think she made it after a second session.

And I don't think it involved any drugs.

Can’t hurt to enquire at your end.

Before flying my sister always gets a prescription for prozax, zolof or some kind of tranq. to ease the anxiety.

If asked, your family dr. would probably write you a script if needed.

That's gonna be one LOOOOOOONG drive! I'd rather fly and be there in two hours...:D

I can't believe so many people are afraid of flying. Flying doesn't scare me, however the food they serve does!:lookaroun

I can honestly say I know how you feel! 4 years ago on January of 2000 we had a trip to Disney planned however the day before we left we had a terrible snow storm (those of you in the north east know what I mean with the nor-eastern snow storms). They had canceled our direct flight to Orlando & my mom was determined to get there so the airline had given us a alternate flight up to Boston where we would wait on stand by till there was an available flight to Orlando. Well before going on vacation I had no time to get all hyped up about the flight (this was a last minute trip that my mom planned in 2 weeks). We were sitting on the tarmac (SP?) and the pilot is telling us that it would be a few moments until they de-iced our wings (keep in mind we were on one of those small plans “puddle jumpers”). I started hyperventilating crying.. Everything because I was deathly afraid… all my little brother (who was 6 at the time) was doing was laughing at me which really didn’t help matters. The flight was horrible b/c all the air pockets that we hit. Well last year when I went to FL I decided to play it safe and I went to the Dr & she prescribed me tranquilizers. I thought that was a good idea.. lol boy was I wrong… once I took them I was OUT… right after I fastened my seat belt I dozed off. My mom said she kept trying to wake me up but I was like dead to the world. When the plan landed I was still completely groggy… I would wake up and sitting up to get up I would fall asleep again lol.. My mom said it was funny as heck.. but I was like not again… I’ve actually learned to deal with flying.. I don’t have anxiety attacks anymore and I actually enjoy it (especially when you hit turbulence.. im like WHHOOO a roller coaster lol. All I can say is to sit back and relax. If you think about the bad you’re going to freak yourself out. I just say.. He’s a pilot.. he knows what he’s doing.. Its his job to take care of us! And you know what.. it works for me. I wish you the BEST of luck with flying… lol and if you get to a bump in the road (IE turbulence) just think of a roller coaster.. it works for me :sohappy:

Good point. The drive should go anywhere from 14 to 16 hours depending on stops. We try and make the drive part of the vacation, but with two kids, it will be a little trying. With the travel I do, I have enough 'Hotel Points' to allow for free stays to and back.

It is the cost of flying and renting a car that keeps us from doing it.

The first time we drove we tried to go straight thru...didn't work.
Now we stop along the way...the drive has become part of the vacation for us, too. What I can't understand is why the kids hate stopping at South of the Border. :lookaroun

Bathroom cleanliness and an attendent who is missing 85% of her teeth? Or maybe the coating of grease on the orange juice glass?

What is "South of the Border?"

Alrighty then. Must say I have never frequented one so I would not be one of his 12 million amigos. We are pretty much limited to Cracker Barrel or Bob Evans for breakfasts, and Wendy's type stuff for lunches or dinner. Cheap and quick.

So, how long was/is the drive from New York?
