I've had these problems with my camera as well. Part of my problem is that I tried to do it just by holding it with my hand. These were taken at Dollywood during their Smoky Mountain Christmas.
Night photography is great, just takes patience. Most of the photo work I do is night time long exposures. A lot of night scenes are very contrasty, which makes it tough to, you have to expose for the details in the darks without blowing the highlights out. Not ewasy to do when your talking exposures of several minutes or so. I have some 3 and 4 hour exposures Ill try to post once I get them scanned and resized. Most of my scans come out at over 70mb, so I dont think that will fly. Heres one I took the other night after Jungle Cruise, Nothing special, but a good simple night shot showing some pretty creative lighting on Disneys part.
