I carry a small cross body Coach Swingpack or the Disney Dooney equivalent. I cut waaaay back on what I carry when we travel. Usually the bag has an outside pocket for maps and everything else I bring I have a miniature size for travel and it all fits. I also don't travel with children and when I do she is old enough to also carry her own stuff :) Best travel wallet ever.... I always carry around a small tote. I always have around a cellphone, my notebook, a poncho, and some snacks. I just got a new one here in Japan. It's a panda that has かわいい (Cute) written on the top. I can't wait to use it!

I usually carry a backpack. I'm getting kind of tired of it, but I can't see any other great alternatives. I mean, I like having a change of clothes in there for each kid, a first aid kit, allergy meds, ponchos, camera stuff, etc. I have some wallets on a string and crossbody bags that work nicely when I don't need everything, but we can't travel w/o allergy meds so something too light just isn't possible.

I usually carry larger purses, but I downgrade significantly for Disney. The past few trips I've used a Lizzy from Vera Bradley. I love that it has a built-in card sleeve and several compartments so that I can store my ID, debit card, park ticket, and cash without weighing myself down with a bulky wallet. Also has plenty of room to fit a camera or travel-size sunscreen. Last WDW visit, I noticed a lot of women carrying the Backpack from Vera Bradley (it's a smaller purse-sized backpack, not a school-sized backpack), so I've just bought one myself and plan to try it out on my June visit.

Sorry, huge VB nerd. Can't wait until the Disney patterns are released this fall! :D

I used to pack light, in a small tote bag. I'd just put my ID, some cash, camera, park ticket, cell, lip balm. Now with DD, I have a big diaper bag that holds everything I need for her, and myself. And that's a lot more stuff. How times have changed! :p

I've used a $5 Adidas draw string back pack on our last 3-4 trips. It's easy to carry and fits everything we need. You can get them from most sports stores like Academy and Dicks. Sure other places have them too.

I do love my giant purses also. And as others, I significantly downscale. I definitely use a cross body. I have a cute Kenneth Cole canvas crossbody that is a good park size that I have had over 15 years. I also have a couple others that I really love.

I also try to to wear cargo shorts or capris. I like having that pocket for keeping all my essentials (ID, park card, cc, sunglasses) with me at all times. Although finding cargo shorts and capris for women is getting harder and harder. And then finding some that fit me...

I'm thinking some sort of Baggallini bag. Most of them have a multitude of pockets and compartments and that makes me happy. I'm easy to please. But that mini backpack was awesome. I'm going to have to look online for one now.
Also look at the bags by Overland Equipment. I have a couple of these (although mine are way older models). Baggalinis, in my experience, are very expensive and the bag doesn't always turn out as great as you think it will be. I like to look on ebags and zappos at all the curretnly available crossbody bags (in all brands).

I usually go down with my sister, mom, and dad. My dad always carries a backpack with the larger items: sun block, waters, umbrella, panchos, and the water spray bottle. Then the rest of us girls carry packs with our sunglasses, keys, cameras, lip balms, phones, and any other smaller items we want for the day!

the trip I was just on I used a little nylon bag/backpack. it weighs almost nothing and can fit in your pocket when empty. if I filled it with heavy stuff the drawstrings can go over your shoulders and you can wear it like a backpack.

another important thing to keep in mind for people going is that even if you don't wan to wait and get things sent back to your hotel the next day you can also have your purchases sent to the front of the parks and can be picked up in about 3 hours. there really is no need for anyone to break their back lugging things around and worrying about losing or forgetting the stuff you just purchased.
