lol! Did the guy just happen to walk up to you and offer you one? I find it weird that some dude in NYC had a family of turtles. Maybe it's just me, lol.

That's cool, anyways, hehe. When we were in Georgia, we found a turtle by a river...we called it Speedy :) lol

See, the thing is, I've seen those turtles, and NYC, or any other northern states are part of their natural habitat. Once winter rolls around, they won't be doing too well, or atleast I think. Anyway, I got a green iguana, which I didn't think would live up here in Jersey, but alot of other people have them and say they do fine. :)

Salmonella

Turtles are infamous for carrying Salmonella bacteria. This bacterium can cause severe gastrointestinal disease or septicemia (blood poisoning). Many animals and people carry the bacteria without showing any clinical signs (remember Typhoid Mary?), yet shed the bacteria in their feces which can infect others.

During the mid-1970s, it was discovered that many young children contracted the disease from their pet turtles. Many of these children didn't exercise proper hygiene (such as washing their hands after handling the turtles and even placing the turtles in their mouths). Legislation was passed making it illegal to sell turtles with a shell length smaller than 4 inches (apparently turtles larger than this can't easily be placed in a child's mouth!)

Prevention, through proper hygiene, is the best way to control the disease. Since most turtles which carry Salmonella are not ill, they usually require no treatment (treatment often fails to kill the bacterium anyway).

I didn't realize they were illegal to buy here until a year or so ago. That's what the pet store told me anyway, and it was due to diseases they carry .

You had to buy them? How much did you have to pay?

Yes, and so do Green Iguanas. But as long as none of your bodily fluids mix with theirs, then I don't think you have a problem.

Bacterium of all sorts can live a long time. If you wash your hands after handling an infected animal or object you should be ok. However, think about the situation. You touch an infected animal and then you go straight to the sink to wash your hands. You turn on the water and wash all the harmful bacteria away. You then turn off the water. Oops you just infected yourself again because your bacteria laced hand touched the water handle(s) before you washed and you left bacteria on the handle. Door knobs, phones, computers, etc. all spread the disease.

ALL Reptiles and Amphibians carry Salmonella. We have several. Please note that your turtle will need an aquarium type tank...not the typical turtle dish sold in pet stores.. (an aerator would be nice, but as long as you change the water...spring only... every few days you can do without it)and an ultraviolet light. Otherwise, it might die. It also needs someplace to get out of the water...if you can put a plant or log in, he would love it...turtles like to climb. You also have to "gut load" or dust fresh mealworms and small crickets for it. Commercial turtle food really doesn't supply enough nutrients.

I wash my hands frequently (I don't allow my son to handle them) and also scrub the sink with bleach after changing tank water.

Turtles under 4" are only to be sold for "educational" purposes, but I've never had anyone question me.

Congrats, Susan! :)

I love turtles. We had them for years (one was a three-legged turtle my brother found--it had severe eye infections, so my mom took it to the vet ($$) and then it was too cold by the time the infection was healed to release it. We made it a home in a big plastic box that we kept in the shower. It had a log for him to climb on and stuff, and the number of the herpetologist was on the fridge. We just didn't use the shower in that bathroom that winter.... It was great when we had company and they'd use the bathroom. I guess curiosity got the better of them and they would look behind the shower curtain and then come out and ask us if we knew a turtle was living in the shower.

As if Whimper Cuthbert Rembrandt Tripod moved all that stuff into the shower without us noticing....

Oh, and listen to Mom, Susan--wash up! I heard that those antibacterial wipes are perfect for this kind of thing because you can wipe off the container immediately and avoid reinfection.

What kind of turtle is it?

We had little green turtles when we were kids and I remember we kept them in a plastic container and gave them some lettuce to eat. We also had one big one that we picked up inthe middle of the road once, and dissappeared in our backyard! We would see her every once in a while come out but one day we just didn´t see her again! She might still be there...

Two years ago, I was in the Mayan Riviera and one night we witnessed the release of baby turtles to the sea.... it was a great and amazing experience. Since they are an endangered species, hotels and the government take care of the eggs until the turtles come out of them and release them so the birds don´t eat them before. It is said that only one of every 100 sea turtles make it to adulthood... sad... :(

thanks for the advice everyone. We are getting rocks for him at the petstore. We are gunna boil them, coz i want them to be totally clean. I'm not sure what kind of turtle he is...the man couldn't tell us anything. But I figured I'd save him. My friend has her turtles that she got wit me, Micheal and Robert, in a fishtank aqaruim thing. I was thinking could I get a big rubermaid container and set him up a lil home? I think I read it online somewhere. If not I'm getting a little aqaurium. No worries guys, he's in good hands. I have 2 birds. and Franklin is another addition to my house! Any otehr advice is welcome..Like foods they like and stuff the cant have.
