What do the airlines do when they have storms like this coming in? Are there alternate flight patterns they take?

Just wondering if the airlines fly AROUND or OVER these types of storms when they can;t fly THROUGH them???

:veryconfu

We were in WDW for Floyd in 1999. We ended up being stuck there (if you can be "stuck" in WDW :) ) because we waited too long to try and get a flight out of Orlando.

About a day or so before the hurricane, the airlines stopped flying planes down to the potential hurricane strike zone. All the planes that were at the airport, left. So, when the hurricane comes in, there is no chance of the planes being affected.

Right before Floyd, the local news showed pictures of the Orlando airport and it was completely empty. Kind of a weird sight.

Overall, I think the airlines strategy is to give any hurricane a wide berth. Isabel will disrupt flight schedules well into the weekend would be my guess....

Sorry...try to stay safe. We're going to have to ride this one out. They say the storms are going to be bad this year...not looking forward to the winter at all.

 In Raleigh, NC right now....conditions not bad yet, some wind and rain but we're supposed to get the most wind hit about mid afternoon. The clouds aloft are moving incredibly fast!!

Starting to get windy here now. Starting to hit the Outer Banks of NC now. It is expected to track up through Eastern NC today, and pass just west of Richmond around midnight tonight with about 50-70 mile-per-hour winds (still potential hurricane force, not just tropical storm). Then up through Northwestern Virginia, in to WV and Ohio and Canada tomorrow as it weakens.

I live in an old brick house that used to be my grandma's. I have a big, old maple tree over and next to the house. I hope everything will be fine, but can't say for sure. The ground has been saturated for about two months.

The urban crescent of Virginia's main population (from Norfolk/Virginia Beach through Richmond and up to DC) is at risk because we will be on the Eastern edge of the hurricane as it passes. I understand that this side of any hurricane is more ripe for tornadoes to occur.

So, here we go....

Boy after you survive all that, it seems like a good time to go to Walt Disney World, right? Good luck to your home and hearth and family.

Thanks everyone! And, yes, it will be a good time to go to WDW after it is over! (Assuming everything is O.K.)

I will try to report in later, even afterwards, if the power stays on and everything is O.K. I can only hope and pray that power outages are the worst thing we have to deal with. Right now, Virginia Power (which also serves the Outer Banks of North Carolina) reports that 200,000 customers are already out in Southeastern Virginia...

So far so good for me, but trees coming down everywhere. Over 500,000 people in Virginia now out of power.

Bridges are being closed in many areas now.

Big limb fell on my parents' neighbors' garage and on my parents' car and truck. But car and truck OK. Garage still holding up, but dangerous.

Many FM radio stations are starting to simulcast local TV news, so people without power can hear.

Hope to see you again soon.

Good luck everyone.

Hope you ride the storm out alright.

We're on the backside of Isabel now, wind has changed direction and for the past 2 hours has been really fierce. Some trees are down here, but all in all, it seems that everyone has fared well- NOTHING LIKE FRAN! For those of you who have experienced hurricanes, you understand that the MOANING of the wind is a sound that you never ever want to hear again. All in all, I'd rather be at Disney.

Whew! I made it! Still no power (doing this at work), but I am alive and the house is O.K. Four trees down, and the power/telephone/cable all ripped completely off my house. The neighborhood is back, but I won't be for a while, until they can get to individuals. Trees still down all over the area, with tangled lines. Still only about 40% of Richmond area is back on.

My basement floods and relies on a sump pump (electric), but neighbors have let me drop a 100-ft. extension cord to their house for the pump.

Can't write much more now at work, but I wanted to thank everyone for your prayers for me and for all of us in the path of the storm. Wanted to let you know I was O.K.

Still sad for others who had it worse off. One couple down the road from me even died from carbon monoxide poisoning from putting a generator in their basement...

Anyway... things are plugging along, and most of us are just helping one another and being patient.
