Hover over "Inbox" in the top right (near the Alerts). Click "Start a new conversation" at the bottom of the box that comes up. Address it to Steve, the mods, or whoever you'd like!

Can people not view this then, I presumed anyone can open your conversation section?

Nope! Conversations are the equivalent of Private Messages.
