How to complain to Disney about a meal after returning home?

Hello all, I am going to post my trip report from our recent trip (Last Wed Sept 12-Sun Sept 16) later but as I was writing a review for Tony's in MK, I started feeling angrier and angrier about the overall experience and now wonder if I can still make my thoughts known to WDW and IF it even matters now...

We dined at Tony's for the first time on Sat. Sept.15. Our reservation was for 7:40 and we arrived 10 minutes early. We asked for an exterior table when checking in and the girl said flat-out , "those are already taken". I explained that I knew they were occupied but that we were early and would wait if necessary. She answered, "we have already received lots of requests for those tables so you won't get one". She wouldn't even note our request! I went to another cast member at the desk/podium who was much nicer and explained that we knew it was crowded but would like to try for an outside table as it was our last night and my son's 13th birthday and certainly did not mind waiting. He said he would note it but that if that wasn't possible, they would put us inside near the front windows for a possibility of seeing the Electric Parade.

Shortly around 8 pm, a cast member (who spoke French as his first language and seemed to struggle with English - we are a bilingual family so use either language fluently) was escorting us to our seats. We had an inside table. We saw a table getting ready to leave outside and asked in French if we could have it. He said that he would check and while he was walking outside to look at it, the rudest waitress EVER walked by us and told me that I would HAVE to go back to the entrance to wait. I wouldn't have minded going back to the entrance to wait but at that exact time, the first cast member who was checking the porch was talking to me and I couldn't hear him because she then started YELLING at me to go to wait at the check in lobby. It was amazing.

WE went back to the lobby to wait on the table to be cleaned and set up for 6 and when we were called again, they took us to a different inside table. We pointed out that we were waiting on the outside table for 6 and they said "it is just for 4 people" - they had taken away a 2 top table and were seating a party of 4 at one. We complained and they actually moved the people who were just being seated at that table.

Our server Michael, was so unpleasant, he really seemed like he did not want to be there. Thank goodness for the French speaking podium attendant who did give us refills! The food was mediocre although the viewing location was worth the money we spent.

They did nothing for my sons birthday although we requested it when making the ADR and also when checking in. I just feel like they knew the tip was a guarantee as we use the TIW card and had a party of 6 and the waiter was so unpleasant, actually angry, and so they did the minimum or less...

I wonder if I should say anything now or just suck it up to one bad experience and move on. Any thoughts??

I am a huge proponent of contacting Guest Relations for anything like this and I would strongly recommend you do so. While the entire experience was horrible, the fact that your server was unpleasant, and the situation with the other server yelling at you, is probably the biggest thing you need to focus on in your comments. The few times I have had something to complain about and contacted Guest Relations the biggest "response" was when there was a CM that created the situation. I suppose the biggest reason is, all the rest of your reasons for a poor experience could've been improved by a pleasant server.

It's best to handle it then and there directly with the manager.

They did nothing for my sons birthday although we requested it when making the ADR and also when checking in.

What did you expect from this? If you absolutely positively wanted something special for his birthday at the meal you should have paid for a small cake, arranged in advance. Mentioning it to a CM, even twice, does not guarantee anything.

You are so right, if he had been more pleasant I am sure that we would have had a positive memory. I so often say on these boards that a bad tasting meal can be made into a wonderful experience if the server is great and a delicious meal can be made into a negative experience if the server is bad -

I don't think that there is an excuse for Cast Members to be yelling at you, but I do imagine that outside seats at Tony's during the parade would be VERY high in demand. Even though you had a reservation it doesn't mean you would automatically get an outside table; there could have been people there with a 7PM reservation that had been waiting to get an outside table for 40 minutes longer than you had been there. I think maybe just let it go this time and next time arrive super early if you want to get prime seats at a restaurant that has a great parade view :).

Exactly! And while I do agree with the above comment that the best time to complain is immediately, while still on property or even better still at the restaurant, because you have at least one name coupled with the date and time of your visit, it's crucial to share the information with Guest Relations ASAP.

My problem was not that I wanted the outside table above all, as there were only 6 tables outside and the restaurant was packed. My issue was the was that the first cast member responded rudely when I asked to note our request when we checked in, by refusing to note the request. That the waitress who was not even helping us yelled (and I really mean yelled) at us when we were trying to speak to another cast member who was helping us and that the waiter was less than helpful. I can deal with the lack of preferred seat sue to crowds but the rudeness was a new one for us in our 30 yrs worth of trips...

You are so right about handling things immediately and not expecting anything as there are no guarantees. We just saw the table beside us and the one behind us getting a small cupcake delivered with a candle and I hoped for the same. It all depends on the server if you aren't paying for the cake, I just wished ours had delivered even a spark of the Disney magic, instead of a permanent frown of disgust...But watching the Electric parade from the front porch while eating was magical enough...

Contact guest relations. It is better to either call or send a hand written letter. Unfortunately they get so many emails that are about tiny details that they tend to get overlooked. If you call (sometimes even tweeting has worked for people) or send a real letter then you know you'll at least be heard and not skimmed over.

Also be very specific. If this every happens again remember to write down the cast member names and where they are from. All that information can be obtained from their name badges. Also be as specific with the time as possible not just the time of your reservation but the time you were actually sat. This is so if anyone was working and didn't have the proper name tag that day they can figure out who it might have been. Just saying it was a bad experience is not enough. You have to say why it was a bad experience just like you did here (bad food isn't always the best complaint if you can say under seasoned or overcooked it is better so they know how to adjust). Disney will respond to the matter the best way they can. I don't like to see other CMs get in trouble but if it is bad enough that you are willing to go to a form to complain then contact guest services.

The cupcakes are paid for (you have to tell them you are willing to pay for it in advance) if it is not a buffet or dinning plan meal. Most people don't realize that but they have to get permission now if it is going to be added onto the bill so you actually have to tell the waiter or waitress (you can pull them aside) and say it is my son's birthday can you bring him a cake with a candle.

I contacted Disney by using the conact us button on their website.and then emailed them about my dining problem. they then contacted via phone asked us to fax the receipt to them and refunded 1/2 of the money we paid for the dinner and we didn't even ask for them to do that, we just wanted them to know our bad service and food.

Can't figure out why you are complaining or think it warrants a complaint.

You had a reservation and it was honored. Not everyone gets to sit at the table of their choosing, it's just how the world works. Also you felt entitled to a free cupcake and this is the basis for part of your gripe?

I hate to blame OP but - it seems like you're making a mountain out of a mole hill. Complain about the quality of the host - but to complain about not getting a free cupcake or a seating accommodation is a bit much

Rude hostess - would not even note a request, we didn't ask that it be guaranteed, just noted
Rude Waitress in dining room as we were being seated - yelling at our party to leave while we were waiting to be helped by the cast member seating us
Angry waiter- made meal that we were paying for and tipping for, less than pleasant

Not a Disney experience

The impression I get is the complaint is re: the CMs who were definitely not acting as we've all come to expect... not that a specific table couldn't be accomodated.

Doesn't sound like that bad of an experience.

The hostess heard your request and told you they could not fulfill it. No reason to "note" anything in a computer. You have nothing to complain about there.

You complained because you didn't get the exact table you wanted. Not everyone gets to sit outside. You don't have anything to complain about there.

You were yelled at by a server when you were standing around, blocking a path and refusing to move. And if you were standing, as you stated...you were blocking a path. I know Tony's. There isn't room to stand and not block a path. Although you shouldn't have been standing, she shouldn't have yelled. If she did, I suppose you have a somewhat valid complaint...but you really shouldn't have been there in the first place. You were being rude, but you can complain that the waitress was rude, too. She's paid to not be rude.

Disney does lots of things for kids having birthdays...but they aren't free. If you want a guarantee that they'll do something for your child, you need to pay for it. You can ASK them to do something for free, but that doesn't mean your request will be fulfilled. Nothing to complain about there.

Tony's always has mediocre food. You could complain about that, but Disney knows this already. Might as well complain to your driveway.

Disney won't know about these things unless you tell them, I called after my vacation in january for a variety of reasons, but I noted that I wish they had fried rice at the hibachi place in japan (the name escapes me) and they said, "we have been getting so many requests for that, it's probably gonna happen"

They can't take a guess what's on our (the guests) minds, we have to speak up! And I think it is a perfect reason to call, hopefully you have the cm's names remembered

Would you have felt better if the hostess gave you some lip-service and made a "note" in the computer for something you were told couldn't be given. The place was filled - you weren't going to get it. Why waste her time by asking for it to be "noted".

You were probably in the way. Sure they shouldn't have yelled - but maybe they didn't yell and you took it the wrong way after not having something "noted".

Angry waiter? You said he was unpleasant. Was he rude? Disrespectful? Or was he just going through the motions and it upset you that he didn't do a little song and dance for you and bring out a free cupcake at the end of the meal?

I have to agree with the 'you don't have a complaint' crowd. I am sorry that you felt you had a bad experience but by the story you gave us it seems as though you yourself did many things to upset the cast members. Here are my thoughts and, of course, only my opinions...

We dined at Tony's for the first time on Sat. Sept.15. Our reservation was for 7:40 and we arrived 10 minutes early. We asked for an exterior table when checking in and the girl said flat-out , "those are already taken".

You made your request and the hosted told you she could not accomodate you.

I explained that I knew they were occupied but that we were early and would wait if necessary. She answered, "we have already received lots of requests for those tables so you won't get one". She wouldn't even note our request!

You asked a second time and she again said 'no.' There was no reason to note this in the computer. you picked a time knowing you wanted to get outside to see the parade which I am sure 100 other people did; not everyone gets that privilidge and I am sure asking a second time, didn't make the situation better.

So after asking the hostess twice and being told 'no' you decided to go to a different cast member and ask them. This person also says that chances were low but they would get you at least to a seat looking Main Street. Ok, that SHOULD have been enough for you. I think that was rude on your part. These places (and any restaurant) has a specific system on how you are seated and I think you should be respectful and sit where they tell you. But that's just me.

Your fault again and I believe there may be some information missing here. I have never heard a waitress yell at someone for not reason. First of all, you were being seated and still insisted on asking for the outside table. Second, how do you know someone who had come 30 minutes before you and had asked for that table wasn't going there? Third, you had absolutely no right to that table and to waste a servers time to find that out is appalling to me. Then you most likely were standing in the middle of the isle where servers couldn't get through no wonder the people were starting to get a little annoyed at you!

WE went back to the lobby

Which you should have done the FIRST the the waitress instructed you to do...

to wait on the table to be cleaned and set up for 6 and when we were called again, they took us to a different inside table. We pointed out that we were waiting on the outside table for 6 and they said "it is just for 4 people" - they had taken away a 2 top table and were seating a party of 4 at one. We complained and they actually moved the people who were just being seated at that table.

Confused here...so...to meet the demand of a crowded restaurant, they split the tables up outside to fit 2 families, which they were perfectly entitled to do...you complained and forced the innocent family, who was probably thinking they just scored some great seats, to have to move to the inside seats instead? Because you felt entitled? Wow...Please tell me I am wrong...:eek:o_O:mad:

Our server Michael, was so unpleasant, he really seemed like he did not want to be there.

That's because the 4 other cast members you annoyed already warned him about you, dude...

Thank goodness for the French speaking podium attendant who did give us refills! The food was mediocre although the viewing location was worth the money we spent.

and worth the aggrivation and annoyance you put numurous servers/guests through...

They did nothing for my sons birthday although we requested it when making the ADR and also when checking in. I just feel like they knew the tip was a guarantee as we use the TIW card and had a party of 6 and the waiter was so unpleasant, actually angry, and so they did the minimum or less...

You may put the notes in but you are not guaranteed people to fawn over your son. Especially after the rude way you acted at that restaurant. If you had been respectful and pleasant (which I am sure you were not) they may have doted on him. But you certainly are not entitled to any free cake or server jumping through hoops. you got your prime parade viewing for the birthday, that should be enough.

I wonder if I should say anything now or just suck it up to one bad experience and move on. Any thoughts??

Yea, learn how to act in a public restaurant. You are not entitled to sit in a certain area and should be respectful to servers and guests. Yea sure, it's Disney, they are held to a higher standard but I bet they did everything they could to try and accomodate you only to be met with arrogance and annoyance. I think they should complain about you. You have nothing sir.

My own experiences with Tony's have been fantastic. On my solo trip in May, I too booked a late dinner there, not because I wanted a parade but because I had flown in that day and gave myself enough travel time. When they were seating me, the girl took me straight out to the balcony. I was surprised but felt really special especially since I did not ask to be seated there (I tend to go where the hostess puts me) I wasn't even seated in the back row...I was right upfront by the railing! I was so surprised and near the end of my meal the girl told me I could stay as long as I wanted because the parade was about to start. I got a dessert and hung out for a bit. The service was excellent, the food was delicious and I had the perfect spot to view the parade. How did I get that magical moment? By being polite and respectful not by demanding and being pushy. By trying to force a 'magical moment' you set yourself up for failure.

I am sorry to be so harsh but I think you were in the wrong.

Our last trip (Nov '10) we had an ADR for Tony's and specifically timed it for the Spectromagic parade. We went to Tony's several days in advance of our ADR, met with the manager on duty and made the same request for an outside table! The manager informed us he would do the best he could. We arrived for our ADR (several nights later), and asked the manager again. He was quick to point out it would be tough. We made it clear we would wait, AND that we understood if he would not be able to honor the request.

We were seated within 30 mins (15 mins past our ressie time) on the porch and enjoyed the parade!

The same approach worked for getting a table at the tank at Coral Reef!
