I agree with the others, it depends on your children’s swimming ability and maturity.
Our DS was 11 (going on 12) years old during our last trip. We went to Typhoon lagoon and after we got settled and staked out our beach chairs we let him go on his own, he knew where we would be and was told to “check in” before he went from one area to another (i.e. wave pool to shark reef) . He is a very good swimmer, better than mom & dad, but does not like water slides so he body surfed in the wave pool and did the shark reef for hours. When he checked in we would get him to sit a minute and rest or all go down the lazy river together. I think that day was the best out of the week we were there. Now let me say that the main reason we let him go alone was that it was WDW and we felt he would be safe.
