How not to start your WDW vacay

We were stopped at a red light in a left turn lan, waiting for the green, so we could get on the main highway to drive towards the airport. A woman going at least 60 (limit on this road) failed to brake and slammed into the back of my stopped SUV. The impact forced us into the F150 in front of us. My vehicle is likely totaled, but thankfully we are ok minus some bumps and aches.

We rebooked on a later flight...delayed about an hour...but hopefully we'll make it safely to AKL tonight.

Thanks again everyone! We're still dealing with some aches and pains...got the girls into the pediatrician today and DH and I are also going to see a physician. I don't know how you dispute fault with hitting a stopped vehicle, but this woman is:devilish:...so it's got the potential to be very ugly.:(:cautious: So, now we have to wait on the police report (which could take 2 weeks) before they can really progress with anything. Also, while the insurance estimate

On the positive side...we had a really nice WDW trip. :) To keep from being too sad, I'm going to start putting together my trip report (took around 2,600 pics over 5 days:jawdrop:) and starting to think about plans for our next WDW visit. :joyfull:

How scary. I'm sorry I am late in reading this but I am glad you're OK, your family, too!! Sounds like the woman is cray cray. Once you have the police reports and any eye witness info, her rant won't stick.

I'm glad your trip went well!!!!

Wow - sorry I missed the first post. Glad you made it safely to Disney after that rough start! I am heading to the airport Friday and now have this in the back of my head!!

From what I remember from my father (police officer) and my driver's safety courses, anytime a person hits you in the back you are almost always at fault. Especially if you were stopped at a light. Even if you were to have been travelling and stopped short (say a dog ran into the road, or something hindered your passage), she would still be at fault because she did not maintain a safe distance at the speed she was travelling. The police report should help you out there.

Glad it all worked out, and glad you are all safe!!

I'm sorry...DH walked in and I posted before finishing.

The insurance estimate (from any of the insurers) isn't in yet, but the guys in the collision center put the damage anywhere between $12k-15k. And due to the value of the vehicle, they're saying this might not be enough to total it.

I'm sorry to put this thought in anyone's head. Hoping your trip is awesome!!!

I hope so...my only fear is that they won't want to cover the front end damage. Apparently, some insurance companies will try and get out of that if there are multiple vehicles involved. They asked about my distance between the vehicle in front of me...but distance between vehicles at a red light vs. in traffic is usually a different thing. Plus, physics should be the logical explanation for being forced into the truck in front of me. i.e. a stationary vehicle being hit at 60mph is likely to travel a considerable distance.

Yes, being safe is definitely the #1 thing. Thanks!

Holy cow! You all probably slept through Test Track after that ordeal.

In Georgia, if you rear end someone, even if you were hit from behind, your insurance company usually has to pay for the damage to the car in front of you except in extreme circumstances. I didn't know this until my teen took a state required drivers class. You are suppose to be able to see the back tires on the car in front of you touching the street. Otherwise, you are considered to close when at a standstill. On the road, you are suppose to stay one car length behind the car in front of you for every 10 miles an hour you are driving.
Either way, they'll take care of you if you have a good company.

I hate to hear about your headache with this situation, maybe also literally too. While this will hopefully work out in your favor, it is still a massive hassle. Between the worries, the pains, and the kids being scared of something like this happening again... Best of luck, Chickie.

I usually try and practice that same requirement when stopping in traffic. i.e. being able to see the back tires. My big fear is that while the lady who hit us has a widely known insurance company, I've also heard several horror stories of them and their treatment with accident coverage.
