actually.....

factoring in inflation, cost of living between chicago and Orlando and a WDW 40 hour workweek @ 6.70/hr (i know.. i know, OT is there for those who want it).... Al Bundy would actually come out on top....

in 1987 when the show premiered, his salary was $12k... which in todays dollars is $21,792... which with cost of living factored in is $16,535 in Orlando.

Now 6.70 times 40 hours a week times 52 weeks in a year = $13,936

Al Bundy makes $2,599 more than a CM

And then he figured out that with all the money he makes after taxes, other stuff, Peggy, he made about a nickel a day.

I just made a cool nickel....Wait, I never thought of that before. Is that all I make? Well the important thing is that you, Bud have to..A NICKEL?! What keeps me going?

And remember, he got Griff after a while. And he hardly ever made sales because he kept making fun of fat women. And he kept giving money away to hot women. And at the nudie bar.
Conversation between Al and BudAl: Son, I want you to have this. Bud: Six dollars? Dad! Your whole paycheck!
and I don't think it helps CMs much to think that they're getting paid less than Al Bundy!

Well, everyone is making valid points here, as I don't really think there's a wrong answer on this subject. But let's be honest, how many of us out there could actually live on 5.15 to 7.50 an hour, without having roomates or 2 jobs? And by the sounds of it, working for the parks, a 2nd job really isn't a good idea, considering the unusual scheduling. Now, I have read on some other threads that there are some cases where cms can request, and get, overtime. But, not being there, I don't really how often that occurs, or how much o/t is allowed. I know that if my Wife and I could not afford to live on that kind of pay, unless one of us was making a really healthy salary, while the other worked for the low wage. And it would make having our own children nearly impossible. So I would agree that you really have to love Disney to work for these types of wages.

Definitely doesn't sound like Disney CM job is possible for me :( not that I'm surprised . My one income household wouldn't make it..and I'd rather feed/clothe my daughter than be a CM. Don't get me wrong, I'd be a kick*** CM..I don't mind working with the public, love making people (especially children) smile, and have a social work background AND work for almost no money now...but being homeless is not appealing.

Maybe that's one of WDW problems, they all these kids working there that aren't all that loyal to the company and don't have a strong work ethic yet (I'm not saying this is everyone).

Anyways, I'd love to live in FL, I'll have to look westward for a good place......

and if I hadn't factored in Cost of Living, Al Bundy would be making a LOT more than CMs

I think the thing that people are confusing is that this most likely is not a "career" for someone. It is either a foot in the door for a better Disney just or sometimes a retired person looking for a fun job. I am not saying that there arent others but I have a feeling this is the most of it. I dont hear too many people here in Ohio saying there are going to make a career out of putting people on rides at Cedar Point.

My point is that the jobs were are talking about are entry level postions that start very low. People are then given the opportunity to work their way up in Disney or work their way out. Its up to them just like it is in any other company.

I've been reading this thread and just thought of another reason that may help to explain the pay for a lot of the CM's. Many that I spoke with are college students on a co-op or from another country and are having an entire "living experience" for 6 months to a year. Not only those around the world showcase. There are lifeguards, hotel attendants and transportation employees on a contracted amount of time so they would probably be most interested in the experience of living in another country and having this on a resume then haggling over their wage.

That being said, I found out years ago that Canadians were known in the US for being bad tippers...particularly those from the East coast (which I am) Our minimum wage also applies to tipping positions so when I found out that some tipping positions in the US recieve a $2-3 wage I was appalled. I generally tip if I feel the service was good and tip more if I feel the server went out of their way but have been known to leave no tip at all if I feel the server didn't make an effort. Not that I want to start a tipping debate but just wanted to point out that people from other countries may find the tipping position wages pretty scary.

I'm FROM the US, and I think the tipping situation is awful. I have never understood why it's "ok" for servers to make $3.00 an hour. Tips are supposed to be for a job well done - we shouldn't be expected to ALWAYS leave one, nor should servers depend on them to make up the rest of their "salary". I know that part of the argument is that some (most?) servers make quite a bit of money from tips, but it seems to me that they shouldn't be penalized for that.

I think the way you tip sounds more reasonable, especially assuming the money is above and beyond what a server is paid, anyway. Is that pretty typical for Canadians?

I think it's fairly typical but I do have friends that have a "no Tipping" policy because they don't get tips at their work. I usually point out that they are making far more than minmum wage but people have different policies on it. I also know a lot of people who only leave a tip if the service is extraordinary and then it's about 10%. Personally I usually leave 10-15% depending on the service but travelling to other countries I've found that even this is considered "stingy" for good service

:lookaroun :( Who said the cost of living in Florida is Low?? Where?? My daughter and grandson have been with me for almost 3 years now ( was supposed to be 6 mo's ) because she could not afford the rent for a one bedroom apartment-- Almost $1000.00 with no extras such as cable or utilities included-- ( not very big either )

Let me see she work's at Fridays for $2.15 an hour with?? tips-- It seems that people are not tipping well anymore even for good service! The tip should be 15-20% now I am told-- as they have to give part to the hostess and the bus person-- ( she is still trying to go to college when she can, kind of hard with the changing schedule , so she can get out of Friday's How long I am afraid to guess---- )

I was very upset to hear that the CM'S are paid so little!! I first found this out about a year ago when on one of the threads someone asked what a CM was paid who was one of the puppeteers in the Tapestry of Nations-- parade! I could not believe it! PLEASE you must be kidding-- They were not!

After that I knew why most of the CM'S were College age or Older ?? -- Well, not to many over 25 and under 60-- Ha Ha-- Unless they were seasonal, or had a spouse who was making a lot more someplace else so they COULD work there just because they loved the job!

I myself would love to work as a CM however who will pay my bills, taxes, insurance and etc. for me??? Anyone?

To all of the CM'S "GOOD" work, fantastic! and thank you for making our visits sooooooooo enjoyable! While I was a Flight Attendant when I was younger, the thing that kept me Ummmm sane was --------

They will be gone soon, and I will probably not ever see them again! just keep smiling! :goodnevil :D Always worked for me------ Enjoy it while you can. Time goes soooo fast!! :lookaroun ;)

Its so lower when compared to the upper NE where I from. There is no question that housing was a lot cheaper.

But I always assumed (I know, bad idea) that you all get paid more, too, to compensate? Because where I live now, the houses are slightly less expensive than Orlando, but everything else costs less OR the wages are better. So I would say it's harder to afford things in Central Florida...
