How much do CMs make? ($$$$)

All I can tell you is that I had an interview over the the DRC (Disney Reservation Center) the other day and I put down that I would accept $11.50/hr for the position. I put that on the application because I was told to do that. When the 2 hour interviews were over, the HR lady told me that $11.50/hr was a lot of money and the position paid less than $9/hr. Here's the thing...she actually thought $11.50/hr is a lot of money...I almost laughed at her. Maybe that's a lot to her but in the real non-Disney brainwashed world, it's nothing.

The last park I worked at payed much more for a front line employee and expected much less out of us. Show up, run the ride safely, and look decent were the requirements, and the pay was stellar. I just don't get how you compliment these cast members so much, and then wonder why they don't get paid more than other parks that provide less service?

I for one don't think that people are necessarily looking at this subject from an emotional perspective. First of all though, I would say this: When a person is hired into any job, eventually the subject of pay does come up. If, when it gets to that point, you agree to it, then it's on you if you don't like the rate later. Too bad, you agreed to it. Having said that, I would also say that Disney has in some way, put themselves in the unenviable position of not being able to pay more than they do to their cms.
When you look at the newer resort hotels that have been built, and the prices it takes to maintain them, it does pigeonhole them to some extent. And when new attractions are built, which are constantly being asked for by cms, guests, mgmt., etc. , the money has to come from somewhere. And unfortunately, you have to suppress payroll in order to pay for things like this. Now please understand, I'm not defending the low pay. I think the jobs should be higher paid. I'd love to apply for work there, but I can't afford to go back to minimum wage, even it if is Disney I'd be working for.

But I also don't fault people for expressing their frustration with the low pay. For me, it's about character. The character of management (upper management), to be willing to take a little less, so everyone can have more. Not just them.

I've been in retail for over 13 years now. But you think that made any difference to Disney when I went to work for TDS as a seasonal cm? Nope!!! Minimum wage for me. But I accepted it with pride, because it was Disney. Would I take that pay full time? Not on your life. And it's a shame. Cause it would attract more people to apply. And from that opportunity you find the best of the best. I've been in the business long enough to know that MOST, not all, of the people that are willing to take minimum wage to work full time, are NOT the best of the best.

Just my take.

I must say that I am disappointed in the wages that have been posted here.... I would like to think that CM and others are paid more than the wages posted.... I think they are worth much more......

Is there anyone here that that lives near WDW that could share how much rent they pay a month? The calculation I've heard is that rent should be 30% of your income.

And hey, while I'm here, are the grade schools near by any good? I'm thinking I could convince my daughter to move..........

just like there are WDW CM's making that $200k+ a year...

the pay scales are about the same for the level of position, just one obviously has many more profesisonal positions (per cap) than the other...

and I know just as well as you do how much imagineers make, considering I see several of them on a regular basis.

Some good points HennieBogan1966. If other amusment parks are paying more than I would have to say that Disney is below standard which I think they should raise.

But which ones are paying more? Not any in Central Florida, at least as far as I know. Why should Disney have to pay any more than neccessary?

I'm surprised that so many people are shocked that CMs start at minimum wage. Don't most entry level positions (unless "highly skilled", as we've said before) start around that much?

Yes, I think CMS are ~worth~ more, but I don't think that the ammount they're paid has much affect on the quality of CMs, at least at this point. Like it or not, Disney is a company you have to WANT to work for. There are other places you could go ,where you could get more money, but not actually love (or even like) your job. Disney knows that, and uses it to there advantage. I don't see a problem with that, as we're all free to look for other work if we want more money...

And how many of us would honestly want to see the prices at the parks raised even higher to accomodate for raises for all the CMS? (Because that's what would have to happen, as the money is certainly not going to come out of any exec's pocket!) In an ideal world, CMs would be appropriately paid for there services, but so would teachers, health care workers, etc.

:eek:Good God, who would have ever thought I'd be arguing FOR the buisness side of Disney?!? I should probably go find some aspirin, as I am apparently delerious from fever or something...:p

They don't even start at minimum wage...minimum wage is I think $5.15 or $5.25...I started my first job at freaking $5.50 and my teaching job made me a whopping $5.75/hour this past year ($6.10/hour this year! w00t!), and I'm pretty sure I have had more training for my teaching job than the CMs running Dumbo had...

I think they legally have to start at minimum wage, don't they? Out here in CA they do. But just because the parking guy makes $7.50 an hour, doesn't mean they can afford to live. It's true - if I worked there, I'd be working there becuase I love it - not because of the money. I'm in a field right now I don't enjoy because of the money. Never making THAT mistake again.

Here in california, I think they'll even charge you for the sunshine...by raising the price of everything else! Sure min. wage is around $7.00, but that means after 2 hours worth of work, after taxes, you can afford 1 gallon of milk and a pack of gum.

You didn't hear? They've raised the price of gum in CA to $6.55 a stick!

I will share. Right now I live in a one bedroom apartment with just over 700 squarefeet of space. Its rent is a discounted 529 per month. The regular rate is 630. Now consider this, I am not in a bad neighborhood but we have had people held up at gunpoint in the parking area, cars stolen and numberous break-ins. I am guess that to live in a "safer" place would run around 700 or so for a similar one bedroom.

The main reason I moved into the apt was because my roommate and I were both working for Disney at the time and thus it was what we could afford. We have since changed jobs to positions that pay nearly twice the starting Disney wage. We will be moving from this place in three weeks to townhome style apartment with 1600 square feet and two additional roommates. We just didnt feel it made sense to pay 900 a month plus for a one bedroom and a den place when we could get three bedrooms and a den and a two car garage for 1500.

However that is the kind of economics you are looking at in central Florida. Bigger apartments with more roommates make much more sense than your average 1 or 2 bedroom place and no roomates.

I totally agree with that, niteobsrvr . If you work at one of the parks, you HAVE to have a roommate or two.

I lived in an apartment with 3-4 other GR hosts (and only three bedrooms!), and we just barely scraped by. I can't remember what the rent was, exactly, but I paid $325 per month (which included elec., water, and cable.) We lived right near property, though. The rates get lower (but not much) as you move away from the attractions and/or downtown.

If I were to look for a house (!), I would look further away, like Kissimmee, Four Corners, or out towards the West coast (Davenport, Haines City.) Further away from stuff, but costs less...

Disney is great for college students (moi) and retirees, but it can get pretty rough for a lot of other people. not to say that it's possible -- you'll wear yourself out, but you can get by on it. kinda...

to be honest I don't hear a lot of gripes about the pay rate at work. at least not from anybody who's been here a while - you can spot the disgruntled CM folks a mile away and you can bet they won't last much longer than 6 months. typical response: "I'm not paid to smile - not for 15 more minutes, at least..."

the biggest gripe I hear is that for the pay rate, we aren't allowed to do enough for the guests to actually make their vacations extra special -- that becomes a big problem in Merchandise, which is the line of business that guests have the most extended contact with day by day. we'd love to be able to run underground to City Hall to see if somebody left their sunglasses in the Hall of Presidents, but I can't even change the air conditioning without calling a manager.

gotta go, time to go to work. :D

Well, everyone is making valid points here, as I don't really think there's a wrong answer on this subject. But let's be honest, how many of us out there could actually live on 5.15 to 7.50 an hour, without having roomates or 2 jobs? And by the sounds of it, working for the parks, a 2nd job really isn't a good idea, considering the unusual scheduling. Now, I have read on some other threads that there are some cases where cms can request, and get, overtime. But, not being there, I don't really how often that occurs, or how much o/t is allowed. I know that if my Wife and I could not afford to live on that kind of pay, unless one of us was making a really healthy salary, while the other worked for the low wage. And it would make having our own children nearly impossible. So I would agree that you really have to love Disney to work for these types of wages. However, again, I think the pay should be higher. But if you accept the position for the pay given, then you should give 110% each and every day. I'm not saying that most if not almost all cms don't, but I read on these very boards all the time about rude cms, or cms who don't deserve the job they have, seem uniformed, or even uninterested in providing people with a "magical" Disney experience while there on vacation.

And I've read where some cms comment about the fact that they are on their feet 10-12 hours a day, smiling, having to smile when guests are rude, or inconsiderate to them. To that I say, welcome to the real world. It's like that everywhere you go these days. People are rude everywhere these days. I am on my feet at work 10-12 hours a day myself. But I accept it. If you don't like your work, go do something else.

Having said all of this, DISNEY, PLEASE PAY YOUR CMS MORE!!!!!!!
