I don't think there is any way to predict which threads will take off and which will die. I also don't think it ever has much to do with the original post (if anything at all.)

Pretty much! Eventually the thread turns into a word association and your forced to go to the original post just to figure out what anyones talking about.

For instance: I don't like cooked peaches

The same way TV shows get good ratings...you simply follow the rule of the Three S's.
-Make it Sexy
-Make the Subject controversial
-Involve Saget

If you've tried the Three S method and still have yet to achieve 100 posts in your thread...you can go an alternative route and use the Double B principle:
-Bump the thread continually
-Bribe other members for their response
(example: I'll give you 3 'Likes' if you respond to "XXXX" thread twice a day...)
