How hard is it to transfer once you start working? (and some other questions)

I got a merchandise position at downtown Disney. I was hoping to work at Magic Kingdom, but I took any job that was offered because I hear you can transfer after 6 months. But, how hard is it to transfer?

Also, I hear you can pick up jobs on the hub... If you work at downtown Disney, would you be able to pick up jobs in the theme parks? How does it work?

Do you get paid during training week?

Thanks in advance!

6 months yes, and you must be in transfer guidelines as well (check with your leader as they vary sometimes within departments). To do so, after your 6 months, just hop accross the street to Casting, on the first floor on the left hand side is Internal Transfers, that's where you will go to transfer to MK, I'm not sure how merch transfers work if you'll have to designate which land or just overall merch and you go where they need you. After you apply you are wait-listed unless there's a spot open, I was waitlisted for about 2 months in another department to get into MK so who knows how long it could take.

As for picking up jobs on the hub, you can pick up other Merch shifts if that's what you mean? You work for Disney so you can do Merch anywhere. It's the EHH tab under the Work tab, you can fiddle about with parks or departments. I will warn you, find someone who works at Magic Kingdom BEFORE you pick up any shifts if you decide to pick up shifts before a transfer is approved because of the tunnels, if you don't know where you're going down there, you will get very lost very quickly.

And yes, if you have to clock in, you get paid, no matter what.

Hope this helped!

Thanks!! Do you know how long you have to wait to go from part-time to being a seasonal cast member? Is it hard to switch?

I have absolutely no clue whatsoever, make sure though if you are going to seasonal that you are able to find a way to work 150 hours in a year, because if you're short any hours you could possibly be termed. From what I've heard from others when it comes to status switches like that, it's a lot quicker to be approved to go down than up, like going part time to seasonal would be approved quicker than part time to full time kind of thing :)

Thanks for all the help! I realized that I should be focusing in school and my main career path at this point... but I still want to work at Disney as a seasonal cast member at least. It'll be like my little hobby, haha. :D

Smart idea :) I definitely know how you feel, I'm full time in college and had that debate with myself a lot, but was able to make part time work. Like I said, the major thing is to make sure that you can really get the 150 hours a year because I've heard sometimes that the scheduling doesn't work that well when you give your availabity for seasonal and all

Your leaders would have to approve you going seasonal before you make the switch. It all depends on the area leaders. Some have very struck rules on who can and cannot go seasonal and some do not. Just ask and see what happens.

I was wondering about the seasonal transition myself. Most of my CM friends are in Entertainment, so I know a lot of them went seasonal and just put in their availability and A LOT of them were denied. So I'm not really sure what that means for them.

How many hours minimum do you have to do for part time? Hopefully I'm able to schedule to work only 2 days a week! Where do you go to college? I had a very candid talk with a friend yesterday and she works in the field that I'm planning to go into... she's been there for quite some time and she said the job outlook is NOT looking good at the moment and boy was that a reality check... I'm sitting here all excited about Disney and the barely above min. wage job when I should be focusing on other things. But I've waited too long to get a job at Disney.. I'm not giving up now LOL. Gotta have some space in my schedule for internships and whatnot though :/ Too bad Disney doesn't really offer any internships that would help me in my career path!

I don't mind being part-time at Disney if the work schedule isn't too crazy, but my main goal would to probably try to transfer to an area where casts are able to receive tips (it takes me approx. 40 mins to drive to Disney World and gas is too expensive these days).

Either you go to UCF or you live by me lol, my drive is 40 minutes as well. I go to Polk State College in Lakeland. As for part time, from my understanding it's 3 days a week. What I do is attend class Monday-thursday (and like one friday class if need be) and then work Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Have you ever considered transfering departments into ones that may help a bit with the pay rate? What field are you going into?

I recently had two interviews with Disney, one for Photopass part-time and one for Disney Cruise Line agent part-time. For both positions I was told I needed to have FULL availability a minimum of 3 days.

I go to UCF, lol. Hm, I gave them 3 days of availability but hopefully I can work on days that I go to school because that would be easier for me.. I'm in school only 2 days a week and only for like 3 hrs each class since I take online classes also. And yeah, I'm definitely thinking of transferring after 6 months or less, if possible. I would do housekeeping.. I hear they get tipped pretty well. Any department that tips, I would try to transfer to actually. Where in Disney do you work at? And I'm going into healthcare administration.

I wanna work at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.. does anyone know if they get tipped? I've been hearing different things!!

Yeah, they also asked me to give full availability for 3 days, but hopefully I can choose to work on other days as well! I have traditions next week (finally! had to delay it so much) and yesterday I went to find Disney University with my friend.. gosh that was a trip.. it's like HIDDEN! It puts me at like an hour to get to Disney University :/ Hopefully I don't have to go there every time I gotta work.. cause I also saw Magic Kingdom's cast member parking lot and all that.

I actually work in Photopass heh and yeah it's a bit crazy with 3 days of availabity sometimes, right now i'm only in 2 classes to finish up my associates, then starting Full time again for my bachelors in Business Administration with a concentration in Public Management :)

Have you ever considered being a waitress? I've heard the tips are worth it.

It's not TOO bad, Pluto is just overflow for Westclock (the main parking), a lot of MK CM's park at Disney University too since it's just across the street from Westclock.. You can always pick up extra days before like I said on the hub with EHH and all :) And have fun with Traditions!! It's loooads of fun! Plus if it's still the same as it was when I did it a year and a half ago, you actually get to go to MK for parts of it to see the operation.

How long does Traditions take? Is it like an 8 hour day?

@ Gt2BtheGoodLife - That's nice!! And, I considered doing waitressing but I have NO experience whatsoever.. I don't imagine it being too hard though. I just wanna transfer and I haven't even started yet!! Lol! I'm taking 5 classes atm, so I'm praying that working part-time won't drain me out too much! It's definitely gonna test my time management abilities and I'm a hugeee procrastinator, lol. What do photopass cast members do, exactly?

@ DisneyPrincess84 - Disney Traditions is an 8 hour class. Mine starts at 7am!!

Traditions is an 8 hour day, but there's breaks inbetween stuff so you don't fall asleep, you're not sitting in a conference room for 8 hours straight listening to someone tell you Walt's life story. I've heard they've changed the formula for Traditions so that it's more interactive!

You can do it, you'll definately have to work on the whole procrastinating, and this is coming from another huge procraastinator too lol, i'm real bad. I have to bring school work to work sometimes to catch up on things during breaks but that doesn't happen often. Photopass is awesome :) We photograph Guests infront of icons (Cinderella Castle, Spaceship Earth, the hat at DHS, the tree of life at Animal Kingdom) at all the parks and also at other locaions throughout the parks including characters as well :)

Sounds like a blast!! And yeah, school can be a huge hassle sometimes, but that's how it is! Do you enjoy working there? Are the people the employees nice? I've heard that getting a cool manager can make all the difference! I have traditions this Saturday, I'm super excited!!
