How does the Toy Story midway ride fit DHS?

It was a marvel to behold, to see just how well they managed to make that run-down, dangerous, crappy roadside carnival in a Paris ghetto look and feel exactly like Chester and Hester!

[/sarcasm]

Lol... My intention in my original question was by no means to defend the ride. I happen to think that whole area loses the overall "Disney" feel and that having a glorified tilt-a-whirl doesn't exactly help. I just didn't remember seeing that setup anywhere else.

I know. :)
I'd just never miss out on an opportunity to rubbish Dinorama.

It is and remains Disney giving us a cheap roadside carnival while telling us the Emperor is wearing clothes because this one has a backstory. It is the lowpoint of Disney Rizzoing their fans, taking us for fools who will embrace anything as long as you slap on characters or story.

Just out of curiosity, where? I'm not doubting you, but I'd never seen that setup before elsewhere. I've seen lots of tilt-a-whirls, but never set on any kind of track like that.

The next closest spinning wild mouse is Power Trip at Funspot USA, less than 6 miles away.
Theirs is by Zamperla instead of Reverchon, but other than the restraint design it's nearly the same ride.

I like to think that the Imagineers were being ironic and "meta" when designing Chester & Hester's. That's the only way it makes sense.

Islands of Adventure at least can do miniature themed lands with their own internal logic.

Disney Hollywood Studios, on the other hand, is a complete and utter mess with attractions that run the gamut from "actual studio tour" (Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, Motors-Action) to traditional themed reality (Tower of Terror, Muppetvision) a combination of the two (Star Tours, Great Movie Ride) to "who cares, it's a ride, you people like rides, right? (Midway Mania, Jack Sparrow).

I wonder how the Studios side of Universal is compared to DHS.

Same problem, though the trend at Universal has been for all new attractions to take the "themed reality" approach.
Transformers, Springfield, and the Alley are all steps in that direction.

As it stands, though, you still have attractions that use all three approaches or a combination.

Mummy's a really interesting special case that actually modifies its themeing approach and changes the rules of its reality the deeper you get into the queue. Then the ride pretends to go all Brechtian, then changes direction three more times. It's like a post-modern theme park ride, and though I'm not sure it's wholly successful it tries some really unique things.

Then why is it called Universal Studios?

I'm fairly certain there are a few things that are still filmed at the park. It doesn't compare to USH, but still.

Exactly, I have no complaints about Universal Studios in Hollywood because that actually is a studio. But the studio in Orlando appears to be more and more of a studio in name only.

In all fairness, if anything at all is still filmed at USF, they have more claim to the logical use of the word "Studios" in their name than HS does.

Well, I haven't seen or heard of anything being filmed over there lately, any more than at DHS.

1) Okay, but your question was specifically about USF. I was simply pointing out that if neither park is using their grounds as an active studios, it's not really fair to criticize just one park or the other for the use of the word.
2) I normally don't use Wikipedia for anything, but scroll down to the "Production Facilities" section on this link:

Well, USF uses their facilities for their commercials, at the least.

The other Universal parks around the globe have "Studios" in their names as well, even though they're just theme parks. It's obvious they just decided to keep the name in the same spirit after the original.

Well, it didn't look like they mentioned anything significant there after 2005, beyond a handful of TV shows for Nickelodeon. And it clearly stated that some of the soundstages, such as those at the Production Central area, were used for attractions like Mummy, the Men In Black ride, the E.T. ride and the Shrek 4D film.

I'm not sure why you're still dodging the point of my comment, which I have already reiterated, but "a handful of TV shows for Nickelodeon" is more than the production going on at DHS. Not everything produced in a studio has to be a billion dollar box office hit.

But just to show more that you chose to overlook:

"Soundstage 21 has been used from 2004-2013 for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) which has produced its weekly television program, Impact Wrestling from there, and has aired some of its pay-per-view events from this location since November 2004; it is referred to as the "Impact Wrestling Zone" for this reason. TNA also uses soundstage 24 for backstage use. The remaining soundstages are available for rent by other production companies."

"A wide range of productions have been filmed in the soundstages during the studio's history, including many local and national commercials. Television shows include SeaQuest DSV (from its second season forward) and Superboy (second-fourth seasons). The Ellen DeGeneres Show taped a week-long series of episodes at the resort in the spring.[80] Sports-entertainment shows WCW Monday Nitroand roller derby series RollerJam! were taped at the studios. In 2009 the studios also became headquarters for the Adrenaline Partnership's FIREBALL RUN(R) series; a popular national motoring event series. "

" Since 2009, the Powerball drawing originates from the facilities."

"While Stage 18 is now used as the Sharp Aquos Theatre for the Blue Man Group, Soundstage 19 and the core production facility are home to Sun Sports and Fox Sports Florida."

But are any of those of any real significance at the end of the day?

:banghead:

Look.... I really don't care this much. Significance is a relative term. It's subjective and opinion-based. I happen to think that certain movies are not "significant," but that doesn't mean that they don't get called movies. Based on the information I provided, the area is, on some level, a functioning studio. You asked a question and I answered it. That was all I was trying to do.

Furthermore, honestly... who cares? Both places used to function as working studios. Both places have kept the word in their names, for their own reasons. Neither company has to justify this to anyone.

I'm not sure why you insist on debating this, but this is my last post for this thread. I really care that little.
