How does pin trading work in the parks?

There's supposed to be the official Disney stamp on the back as well as the weight should be "heavier" than the tin copies, but who knows?

Scrappers come from the manufacturer in China. They are the over-runs made to replace defective pins in the initial run. Also, they will run an excess of a pin. They have all the markings of official pins. Counterfits are another thing. They can range from "perfect" to junk. I don't much care if people want to trade these pins from China as long as they understand they are supporting the counterfit trade from there. Don't care? Then don't complain when the couterfit car part you paid for fails or the medication your kid needs doesn't work. Out of work automobile worker who lost his job to China? Oh. well.

Sounds awesome! I'm going to get on eBay today and order a big lot! How many should I get to start? I know some of the lots on eBay ensure that they are authentic.

Unless you are paying several dollars per pin, odds are the lot isn't authentic. Even if they guarantee the pins are, or that they are tradable in the parks, most likely they are fakes/scrappers/counterfits whatevers. If it is a smaller lot where the pins pictured are the exact ones you will get, and it is a few dollars or more per pin, then they may be real. (From someone selling their collection or something similar) But these people that offer multiple lots of large quantities of pins are usually a dead give away that something isn't right.

We thought that all cast members wearing pins traded with kids. Until my 7 year old son asked to trade with one and she told him, "No, I already have one like you want to trade. You have to trade one I don't have it." When he told her that he wasn't interested in trading any of the others he had, she told him, "Well, you could go buy one I don't have, and then I'll trade with you." I was absolutely floored.

It may have not been the best way to tell your son, but they were correct. They are not supposed to have more than one of any given pin on their lanyard. Some will, but they aren't supposed to.

Good to know! I'll probably try this before my December trip! Is there any way to tell if they're authentic?

It depends on the pin. Check out PinPics.com to see perhaps the best known database on pins. Many times when people have confirmed that fakes/scrappers/counterfeits (referring to all 3 solely as fakes for ease of typing for the rest of this post) exist, they will post on there, normally with pictures and a description of why it is a fake. However, different factories produce the same pin (both legally and illegally) so there are going to be differences and just because it doesn't match a known fake, doesn't mean that it isn't. General rules of thumb to look for
1) The fake pins weigh less. Hard to be certain unless you have a scale and a known good pin, but after handling a bunch of good and bad ones, you will notice that some definitely are lighter
2) The fake pins are thinner. Once again, not the easiest to tell, but most likely they use less material (and a lighter material) to make the pins cheaper to produce.
3) The colors are off. Comparing to a known good pin, some are obviously wrong, others are things like Donald's beak being more a nuclear greeny yellow instead of the normal yellow.
4) The edges are messy. Most fakes will not properly trim the edges, You end up with bits of flash (like on cheap plastic toys) where it went over the mold a smidge. Also, pins that should have small cut outs (next to the thumbs on some of the vinylmation pins) are often not cut out.
5) The backstamp isn't correct. Sometimes they will have the completely wrong backstamp. IE A 2010 pin with a 2012 trading logo. Some pins were produced over multiple years, so variants exist, both others are blatantly wrong. Some pins have a backstamp pattern (usually Mickey heads). The fakes the heads will often not go all the way to the edge, or will be mishappen (Mickey's ears look more like balloons with a little stem connecting them to the head).

Once again, PinPics usually has a section on fakes and how to spot them, and often update their forums with known scrappers.

The fakes fall into multiple categories. Some are straight up fakes. Pins made of Disney things that Disney never actually made pins of. Logos taken from other merchandise is a common example. Or Disney characters doing things they shouldn't be. Scrappers are pins that were made as part of the run, but should have been scrapped. Either they weren't 100% up to standards, or the over run. Normally a factory will make say 550 of a LE 500 pin. That way if some come out wrong, they can still fulfill the order without having to run off just a few later on. So if any of those extra 50 end up not being needed, they are supposed to be destroyed, but often end up being "saved" from the factory and then sold on eBay. Counterfeits are just that. Some are made in unauthorized factories, others just in unauthorized runs. IE a manager has a 3rd shift come in and make pins when they were only supposed to have 2 shifts.

I love how people like to report CMs for nonesense like this.

Nonsense...

Thats Interesting as the CM's job is to make the expierence as enjoyable as possible not give your child an arguement over a pin..much less try to coerce you into buying a new one to trade. If the CM is a "trader" and the scenario is as written...that CM overstepped, and obviously irritated the parents who spent their hard earned money for that vacation. Doesnt mean the CM needs to be fired or flogged, but maybe they need to "not trade" pins if they are too attached to them.

Perspective is always in the eye of the beholder or in this case the offended party.

Two years ago my DS also attempted to trade a pin with a CM who politely told him that she already had that one and couldn't have two of the same on her lanyard. He was happy to trade a different one though, and I never thought twice about it.

Because Disney pins get me to work, care for my children, or build my cars? Extreme much? Hey, if you want to pay $7 per pin, have at it. Not my household.

They aren't attached to the pins. Those aren't their pins. The pins belong to Disney.

It's their job to trade Disney's pins according to Disney's policy.

Disney's policy is for them to not have duplicates.

If a kid wants to trade a pin, all they need to do is find some cm who doesn't have that pin already.

I realize that occasionally this will mean a child has to be told to wait before getting what they want, but they will get it eventually. Even the most poorly behaved children can usually manage not to throw a tantrum if they're told they will get what they want after a brief wait.

Hey, not to worry; I can afford it.

Kudos to you sir. I'm not interested in evaluating my worth as a human by the money that I make. My kids enjoy the pins, no matter where they're made, so your judgement holds little value in my mind.

We go to the local drive in because paying $14 for 4 people to watch 2 movies is better than paying $50ish to watch one movie with a room full of people coughing, talking, and being annoying. We also bring our own food and drinks(allowed by the drive in) because it saves money. We eat off of the dollar menu when possible because, you guessed it, we're trying to save money.

I'm afraid that you might have being frugal confused with being poor. I'm sorry that you feel the need to try to diminish another person because you think their "worth" is less than yours by assuming you can afford something that they cannot.

Well, I guess I should be making you proud in September then, because we're moving on up to a moderate!!

I personally could not care less about people buying, having or trading scrappers.

I think that it is important that people who follow the rules know that most people aren't doing that...so they don't spend a bunch of money on the real deal only to end up with fakes - assuming they care about the fake thing.

I also think people who buy the cheapos on eBay should bear in mind that if the kid starts taking a liking to pins - not just trading the ones mom got because mom thought it would be cool for them to do - if the kid starts liking the pins...they're going to end up wanting to buy pins and collect them. And that gets very expensive, very quickly.

Just a word to the wise!

As I said in my original post if people want to trade scrappers and counterfits I don't care. However, there are unintended consequences to doing so. No judgement, one way or the other was made.

You brought up the price of pins, not me. Saving money is a good thing. You're to be commended. I'm not sure why you're so defensive about it. I have no opinion about your "worth" either as a person or your net worth. Frankly, unless you are planning to put me in your will I could not care less.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that I assumed you can't afford a $7 pin. Again, you brought up that price not me. I have no idea what you can afford or not. Congratulations on "moving on up". We don't stay on site. We can save a lot of money staying off site. We spend it on pins. :fork:

A lot of people enjoy pin trading especially youngsters. I collect pins and have never traded. I have categories of pins that I seek out. Lady & the Tramp, Goofy, Patriotic Themes, etc. To each his own.

Sometimes what you collect is hard to find or you didn't have the chance to purchase it when it was for sale. So you are able to purchase things that other
People might want and then trade them for what you need. It's really no different than other trading collectibles like cards, coins, etc.

I guess I read it wrong then.

We mix up our trips between onsite and offsite. In March it's offsite and in September it's onsite for Free Dining and EMH.

I don't get the point of trading just to trade, either.

I get Disney's point! They hook a lot of kids on pins by doing this trading thing. Once the kids are hooked, they sell more pins. Duh.

But I don't know why people want to trade so much that they'll blindly buy pins just to trade them. It makes NO sense to me at all.

I have traded duplicates. Every time they sell the IASW pins, I'm like a fly to...it. I have to get the whole collection. IASW pins are my downfall. So I end up with a bunch of duplicates, which I trade for the HM collections. :)

I would much rather go to a drive in then to a movie theater. It's a lot more fun. We used to go all the time when we lived in Michigan, but we can't find one near us now. I wish they would bring back the drive in. To few of them.

I only buy pins that we want and we don't trade them. I bought some from Ebay a several Christmas's ago and stuck them on my daughter's stocking. She loved them.
