HOw Does Mission Space work?

I'll be riding mission space for my first time this weekend. I was wondering though, with the g forces and weightlessness for a moment, how is it done? Can anyone explain?

You are sitting in a large centrafuge. To create the take off sequence they spin you very fast. You see these kinds of rides at carnivals sometimes. To create the sensation of weightlessness they stop the spinning and turn your cabin a certain angle so that feel weightless.

A giant centrifuge, similar to what they use to train astronauts at NASA.

You sit in a "pod" that hangs on a giant arm. There are a number of these pods on one centrifuge (similar to Dumbo). Then it spins and accelerates at different rates, simulating different gravities, etc.

That's what I know, or have heard, anyway. Let's not get more technical than that, HAHA!

Just to add here is a link to the company that built the ride technology for Disney. The pictures and animation is for a slightly different version then the one that is used but will give you the idea of how it works. Also watch the video it explains a lot better then we could.

Choose the MAC ride system

Well, it's a little more then that. Mission: Space is built using individual simulator pods that have the ability to tilt from side to side and from down to up. Each of these pods is attached to a wheel facing inward. (Think Dumbo, but the elephants facing toward the center.) This creates real G forces, and simulated weightlessness. :) That should give you the gist of it. :)

Yes, the 10,000 threads and articles on WDWMagic that expain how the system works

well just look at it like this. I searched and saw more threads than I could probably count in a year, and I just don' thave the time, and you know, I throw my five bucks on this site, so how's about this...................we just let this one ride? I just dont want to take the time to be frank. I just don't have it. :D

Does it not take more time to wait for a reply, than it would to just search?

Calm down, guys. Let's not start a fight. This is suposed to be a happy place! ;) Instead of fighting maybe you could direct him to another post that has the info. But it's nothing to get worked up about:) You could also check out #disney-central on IRC. (follow the link below in my sig) It has a lot of ride videos and Mission: Space is among them. If you don't mind seeing the ride before you ride it, you can download a ride video and see if it's something you'd want to do. I personaly loved Mission: Space...although I wouldn't eat a big breakfast before you ride. lol Happy St. Patricks Day, by the way! :)

Guys, we're here to help each other out, not flame everyone. Disneydewald has the right idea. There are better ways of telling him to "go search." "Go Search" is like telling someone to go F*** off. Espically after the question has already been answered here on the same thread. You think I act childish, and yet you bring up a "go search" just to be mean. There's no sense in it.

We're here to have fun, not to attack each other for evey little thing you do wrong. If it doesn't hurt anyone, then there's no reason to get mad.

And if it will help, I'm willing to write an entire FAQ with the most asked questions here at WDWmagic. Searching just is too crazy... we simply have too many posts about mission space. I think an FAQ could work wonders here. Anyone wanna help me write one?

No, Go Search!

I admit I was a bit harsh, but with just one click on the Mission:Space link at the top of each and every forum page, would have brought you to a page with a complete ride overview and more

Great! PM me when you're ready. If anyone else wants to help out, PM me. I think this would be a great project, pending Steve's approval. How bout it Steve? :)

The way I get my head round it is to think of movies and cartoons where they have the 'space training gravity thing'. Where they put the would be astronaut in a capsule, attach it to a pole in the middle of the room, then spin it around like mad until the guy can't take no more.

Now add a the Disney feel... basically instead of a little capsule you have a big, shuttle like one. You sit in there with three other people, and have controls and screens in front of you. The screen shows an awesome video of you leaving earth and flying to Mars that is timed to perfection with the weightlessness of the ride and the different forces it puts you under as your spin. The trick is though, unlike the would be astronaut in the movie, your mind thinks your moving forward and aren't being spun around like crazy, so you get the sense of flying through space and landing on Mars.

Hope that helps... :lookaroun

I understand the effect with the slingshot around the moon and the descent to Mars, but how do they achieve the same feeling when you lay on your back for the launch? The G's should put pressure up on your head because your feet are looking toward the center of the centrifuge, but it still feels like your entire body is pushed back in your seat, just as when you face the center normally.
