How do you display your pins?

I just started pin collecting (I only have ten, so I'm just a novice compared to most of you here) but I am looking for a way to display mine. I'm not big into the lanyard idea, and have nowhere near enough to warrant having one of the big pin books to put them all in, so was wondering if anyone else out there had some creative and interesting ways they displayed their pins. Or just any Crafty Cathy's out there that might have some ideas as well.

Personally, mine are in a box right now. But, this is my plan for the future. I'm going to buy a shadow box and a piece of black velvet large enough to fit inside. I can then pin some pins to the velvet and hang it in the shadow box. My plan is to rotate the display every once in awhile, or just keep filling it up.
Hope that helps.

Nick, get a shadow box. Use a thick backing covered in black or bark blue velvet-like material. You will be able to add to it easily. I keep meaning to do this to mine...I have 2 lanyards full, but something always seems to come up.
(like buying the kids clothes or shoes  )

and stay off of ebay :lookaroun

Another more casual suggestion is to make a pillow. Put the pins on the front before sewing and stuffing it. There is of course the drawback of not being able to change them without opening the pillow up. On the other hand, a collection of themed throw pillows might be interesting.

I haev built-in shelves in my bedroom and keep my pins on there for display. I also have some in a book and three pieces of artwork hanging on my wall that have pins on them. I'm in the process of designing a box for my wall to put them in. After the sketches are all done, time to hand-craft it myself and do some glass etching on the outside door!

I just have mine on the necklace they come on in wdw, hanging around the handle of my closet. Nothing special but they catch my eye now and then.

 I guess you learn a lot when your father does a lot of wood-working. He's got about every tool and machine that I need to do anything. Once I get it done, I'll try to remember to take a picture and post it. I just need more time with the glass etching. And no, I'm not Bov Villa, although my biology professor looks and sounds quite a bit like him. I also grew up watching a lot of "This Old House" and other similar shows.

Great mind's think alike!

(Or as the Genie in Aladdin would say...."No....great mind's think for themself!")

Sorry, just had to say it.

The pillow idea is different, and I like it! How about using a slip on pillowcase, where the backs overlap about 2/3, that way you could change the pins without having to take apart the pillow!

two words...

Craft Foam!

It comes in a variety of colours, the pins easily penetrate it, you can glue it together with white glue or even a glue stick, and you can even add details using magic markers.

It is cheaply available at craft stores and even some dollar stores.

You could mount each pin on it's own little shaped piece of craft foam, and then mount them all together. Since you only have ten pins, you could buy a picture frame, pop out the glass, and put the craft foam in it. Depending on the frame, you could hang it up or prop it on your desk (or really any flat surface).

It is inexpensive enough that if you wanted to remove one or all pins to continue trading, you could change it or redo it.

I have seen so many different displays of pins. We have ours on bulletin boards that we applied a thin layer of craft foam to and then covered in fabric. We have one that is covered in black felt that displays all our pins that are not Lilo & Stitch. For our Lilo & Stitch pins, we have a board covered in a Hawaiian print.

I have seen people that have taken the boxes that they sell at Michaels that are in the shape of a Mickey Head that they lined in craft foam and turned into a shadow box display. I have seen people that mounted their pins on craft foam and then framed them. I have seen lots of really creative displays that have been tricked out with clipart. Some people take the picture holding Disney plush characters and display a pin or two inside the soft plastic frames they hold. I have seen people decorate a lanyard and then hang it around a cherished stuffed critter's neck to make a stuffy trader. The possiblities are limited only to your imagination. Have fun! Maggie

I have them all in a pin book. I think I'm somewhere between 200-300. It's an addiction. I know some of you think I'm crazy but I like it. I love finding new pins and rare ones. I have some universal ones too but those are on lanyards. I have some Disney lanyards from when I used to wear them but they're just in my book now too. :)

I have about 10 as well (hoping to add many more on my trip next week!), but for now I just took a nice piece of dark fabric and an embroidery hoop that was like $3 in the Wal-Mart craft section and stuck it on the wall.

My son and I share a collection - 400+ and counting (pins counting up, money counting down, but that's another story).

We have several ways to display ours. Some pins go in deep frames similar to shadow boxes, but not quite as thick. We frame them with photos that match the pin's theme. For example, we have photos of various MK land entrances along with land pins; photos of my son with characters go in frames with pins of those characters, etc.

Some get framed with park maps or other appropriate printed items. We also do this with resort maps or such, along with resort pins, for places we have stayed.

I tend to specialize in cast pins, particularly operations and security pins. These are framed with photos, manual covers, etc. from the different departments.

One cool set we have - in 2000 or so, there was a 6-pin set called Kookie Cutouts (each pin had a major character surrounded by colorful geometric shapes). We found a coloring set at County Bounty that matched the pins - it was just the black outlines. I took these and used colored pencils on parts of the artwork. When we framed them with the pins, it looks like "concept art" for the pins.

One last idea - credit Bob at JBBeans for this - is to take 2 or 4 pieces of thin plywood and craft a 2-sided or 4-sided pyramid. Set the pyramid on a lazy susan spinner. Drill small (stick pin sized) holes in the board and either stain or paint the board. Then add the pins. Makes a cool coffee table display.

Of course, a lot of pins are still in the book, on the lanyard, in the suitcase, etc. But that's how we do it! Most of all - collect what you like and like what you collect!!

I only own 7 pins. I don't really collect them... I just buy the occasional one I like.

As for displaying them, I have them all attached to a long, wide, black shoestring I have draped over my computer monitor. Works well enough for the purpose it serves.

I've used aida cloth (cross stitch cloth) as a display base, and then sewed lines of decorative stitches on the sewing machine to make a grid, somewhat like a checkerboard. The pins go into the open spaces, and the decorative stitch lines set them off pretty nicely. I've finished the edges of the cloth with bias tape, and use some fabric tubes or bias tape as hangers. So far I've finished three of these displays, which hang over a quilt hanger. Since I've done more collecting than sewing, I really need to make some more! :animwink:
