T1 here at school. Back to a slow 56K at home that usually only connects at about 33.6 (I know its a 56K, there just aren't that many lines and transfer is real slow.).

If only I could pack up my T1 and take it home or pack up the DirectTV and bring it up here to school. Then I would have the best of both worlds.

cable...it's RoadRunner through Time Warner Communications, a company I loathe...it's caused so many problems for my computer....but I suppose it's fast...except on the weekend ~shivers~ ...or whenever it feels like irritating me.

If you are getting 48k, you are getting as fast of a connection on standard dial-up as you're going to get. The 56k thing is sort of misleading because even though your modem may be capable of receiving downloads at speeds of up to 56k, by federal law, the fastest your ISP can send it to you down a phone line is 48k... If I remember correctly (back in my tech support days  ) it's because of line interference which can be caused by sending it at the higher speeds.

Cable, for sure. I'm completely spoiled now. We have a 128 at work, and now I find that slow since I got my cable modem. Now if something takes more that 10 seconds to download, I get a little impatient...but just a little...:)

Well, fortunately the online service is fantastic and gets excellent speeds.. one of, if not the fastest cable service around. My speeds average 5,000 kbps down & 1,000 kbps up.

I just don't like CableVision. I recently upgraded my TVs to DirecTV and haven't looked back. My only ties to CableVision now is the OOL Internet Service... which as I said above, fortunately does not have the same traits its parent company does.

Its surprising how increasiingly popular cable modems are becoming. Within a few years, it will be the standard, and Dialup modems will probably be history.

I use dial up 56 kbps, but it is always connecting at 50.6 most of of the times.
For the past three weeks I have been getting disconnections every 5 minutes, so I am switching to CABLE hopefully next month! :)
