How do I present my work

Hi! I'm Robert, 16 years-old high school student. After finishing the high school and university I want to become an Imagineer. In my free time I work on projects like designing attractions and shows that would fit in Disney Parks. I make concept arts, plans and models based on what I create. Based on this, I got a question: when I will apply for the job (not soon), how am I able to show all my projects and models?

Ambitious. It's not quite that easy.

The trick is getting people to view it.
AND not getting someone steal your ideas while staying clear of the classic art trap of "We wont pay you anything, but we will let you have the wonderful opportunity to showcase your art in our company products".

A good portfolio is not everything and is something that is developed over time. If it is something used in your desired field you should come across it is university. Even then, a portfolio is not everything. With many jobs it'll always be helpful to know someone who can advocate for you, but that is a bit more difficult in a massive, bureaucratic company like Disney.

WDI hires people of many disciplines so it may be easier to focus on designing show scenes or making models. I honestly don't know many of the disciplines at WDI but it might help to specialize in one or two things.

Yes... that is what I thought about too. I asked about the portofolio in general, because some Imagineers were hired because their portofolios were large and high quality. I just wanted to know how can you show them yours.

I've learned so much about being a good imagineer through these competitions. Before i joined here, I was a spectator of Master of the Parks, the think Different challenge, the Sorcerer's Apprentice and many others. So I decided to try one out. From doing the WEDCar race (I won it too. I think it was beginners luck though:p) and Spring training Anyone? I've learned so much about how I can be creative and no one can tell me I'm not. So, along with Englandg, I recommend you join the next competition that comes up. I'm sure you'll be great at them to. :)

A great way to present ideas is web blog/websites but remember every person has different skills and abilities to grab the attention. Also never be afraid to take a job that isn't imagineering. They don't higher people who want to be imagineers their how life they higher people who know what they are doing and are in love with what they do. You never know. Any job you take may teach you skills that make you a prime employee for imagineering.

It is perseverance first and foremost.
It is also having the skills/talent that they are looking for their various fields and knowing how to present yourself.

Keep in mind when deciding a plan of attack - the folks at WDI have seen it ALL.
Ask yourself this :
What is it about YOU that is going to make them take notice and pick you out of the massive crowd of hopefuls?

The answer is up to you, but it helps to have something that sets you apart from the masses.
Choose something unique and it just may give you the edge.

For example, thousands apply as graphic artists. If you applied too and were interviewed, what would YOU want to showcase that would stand out and be unique?
It is often that *unique* element that gives you the edge.
So many can draw/paint....but how many of them take it to the next level in a creative and surprising way?

Like i said...the real answer is up to you.
Good luck !

:)

Agree with FigmentsFriend on Perseverence and add be a Diverse individual. By diversifying yourself in multiple media and techniques you become more valuable as an asset to handle and comprehend multiple levels of a job and that is always a good skill set but more importantly you learn ways to adapt and make you and as a result your ideas better and helps make you more aware of the bigger picture of a project and its scope.

I guess I will step in and help. I have participated in many comps here and would recommend joining SA this summer, we really have created almost our own mini WED . I would suggest thoroughly reading up in WED history, studying the parks in detail, and begin to create digital folder/portfolios. I have separate folders for all of my projects and designs, this is essential in creating a future profile. Next, find something in the imagineering process you are skilled in and focus on it. Whatever it is just perfect it, possibly major in college. I would also suggest working in the college program, it allows you to work in the company and possibly move up.

Most importantly, is to realize that it may take years to get in or that you may not make it all. You also need to be ready to handle the stuff that will hit you during your journey.

So I have to create a good portofolio with everything I did and show it to the RIGHT people, who can help me get in the company to present it.

As some have said, a stellar portfolio is definitely needed. As far as getting it to the right people, start here.

https://disneyimaginations.com/

A friend of mine did this competition a few years in college (didn't win) but is today an imagineer because of the people she got to meet while doing it.

Another great way to get in the right direction is to become a CM on the Disney College Program during school. You won't be doing anything having to do directly with imagineering but you will have the opportunity to take classes about engineering, network with folks in the field and put a gold star on your resume for the future. Check disneycollegeprogram.com and disneyinterns.com for more information about the programs offered.

In the meantime, keep brainstorming, study hard and get good grades. In an job that is as competitive as imagineering, you need to have as many tools in your tool belt as possible.

And, always have a back-up plan. GOOD LUCK!!

I already do of all of that!(about WED history, details, projects and design) and I really know what I am doing and what I have and want to do. I have a nice profile yet, but you always have to create something better and at the next level, to push yourself and discover new horizonts. :)
