I apologize if this has been asked before. We are planning a trip in the fall and would like to spend a day at Universal. How do I get there without renting a car?

We take the Lynx - the public bus transportation system - from the TTC. The drivers are great and help you. We used it twice to go to Sea World. The drop you off right at the gate. It cost a family of four only $12 round trip. Check it out. Their schedules are online.

You can ask the concierge at your resort to call a taxi,just make sure leave plenty of time that morning to get to the front desk and there may be a small wait. You can also set something else up ahead of time, I recommend Orlando Garden Tours, http://www.gardentoursandtransportation.com.

In January we took our bus from the resort to Downtown Disney. The bus driver made an announcement telling us that if anyone is going to Universal the stop for the bus is right across the street. Honestly, I have no idea what side of DTD we were, if the bus is free, if its provided by Universal but its definitely worth looking into. It was right next to some sort of yellow hotel buildings..maybe someone else may have a little more information on this.

As I too am looking to make that journey I looked into the Lynx buses as you suggested. According to the website to get from Walt Disney World Resort to Universal Studios Resort is a 3 hour long journey?! How long was your bus trip?

Mears has a shared shuttle that was fairly cheap or taxi which wasn't but much faster. Like 40-50 each way from Boardwalk The mears shuttle was like 40 round trip for 2 adults

Car rental - can do a one day rental on site, or from one of the DTD hotel maybe $40-60
Taxi - MK to Uni is estimated @$40, Epcot to Uni is estimated @$33 (both using Mears here -> http://www.mearstransportation.com/taxi-services/taxi-fare-estimator/) so $60-$80 round trip + tip
Shuttle - Mears does offer group shuttles to Uni, some ticket vendors/TAs will offer them as a package or you can book individually, according to this -> http://www.mearstransportation.com/pdf/Rates.pdf should be under $20 per person round trip
City Bus - You can take LYNX from DTD to Uni, but do plan on spending a few hours as I think you need to transfer twice?

It's only a 15 minute drive from the Epcot. I would get a taxi or use Mears.
We drove it several times in October. It never took us more than 20 minutes and that was because of traffic that morning.
