How crowded is New Year's Eve?

I've been there for the 2013-2014 holidays and the 2012-2013 holidays (from December 17th past new years)... from about the 20th to jan 2nd is awful.... Christmas eve, Christmas, new years eve, and new years are insanely crowded.

The only thing that made the trip not terrible is my disabled grandmother was with us so go to go to the fastpass lines on every ride, but they have done away with that policy

Thank you all so much for the feedback and suggestions.

I like the compromise suggested about going to California Grill on the 30th and watching the fireworks then. DHS might be an option for the 31st. What is Downtown Disney like?
