What about Swan or Dolphin? Cheaper than a Mod and sometimes a Value with a much nicer hotel for the price. On property, right near DHS, bus service..I think the only thing you don't get is Magical Express, which I found overrated anyway.

Check out VRBO.. We never stay on-site and we love all the room! We have stayed at World Quest Resort and Blue Heron Resort. Both amazing hotels with good rates. :) I also was thinking of staying this Dec. at Lake Buena Vista Village and Spa. The owner quoted me from 12/13-12/20 for under $1,000 for a 2 bedroom condo with washer/dryer and kitchen . plus jacuzzi tub after a long day is nice. They also have a huge pool with a pirate ship in it. Thought my 9 yr. old son would love that! You can't get all that room at Disney without paying an arm and a leg. We just rent a car.. I rented an SUV at National for 10 days and it was only $400. Still less expensive than staying onsite. PM me if you have any questions! My son had fun at the hotel pools and enjoyed staying there too. :)

You may want to look at the Double Tree Suites on Hotel Lane, the room we had came with two queen size beds and a queen size pull out couch in the living room which also consisted of a kitchenette and a dining area.

We have never been to WDW and are considering renting through VRBO. Much cheaper for a family of 5 and looks nicer. Should I worry about not having the extended hours and the easier transportation? Thanks!!

Depends on when you are going. If you're going during a peak time like Spring Break or Easter, then yes, EMH's are important since you won't be able to make fastpass+ choices 60 days in advance as resort guests can. Transportation isn't that big a deal to us. We like to drive even when we stay onsite.

We have to go during spring break, so yes a peak time. So, the biggest advantage of staying on-site is the fastpass benefit? Thanks for your help!

We've gone several times during Spring Break, after the last one, we said we'd never do it again. However, we went the week after Easter which is one of the peak weeks as is the week before. Additionally, this year Easter isn't until April 20th. Many will wait until then, so in theory, the parks won't be quite as busy during the regular earlier Spring Break weeks. Can't tell you that for sure though. EMH's and advance fp really can make the difference between a good trip and a not so good. One more however, if you do enough planning and do your homework, you will be fine even if you do stay offsite and have to make fp choices each day when you enter the parks.

Thanks, you're very kind. Since I'm such a newbie, can you tell me the best place to do my research? Thanks again!
Passporter and Unofficial Guide to WDW are good starts. You can buy them at Barnes & Noble. I think there's also a downloadable version. Asking questions on the site is another. Plus go back and read old threads on here. The Disney site is also a good place to get good info. I am happy to answer any questions. If you don't want to have to deal with which thread to put your questions, please feel free to pm-private message-- me.

Spring break can be quite busy, but it's doable if you plan on early mornings. Staying onsite during spring break is no picnic either, and the chaos in the food courts alone would convince me to stay offsite.

I just got quoted $810 for a 2 bedroom condo from 12/13/14 - 12/19-14 at my favorite place Blue Heron Resort. Check out this unit and hit Message Me button to request a quote!

I like how you deal with the owners and that saves you a $12/night resort fee. ;) This will definitely fit all if you, PLUS the master bedroom has its own private balcony with a Disney Fireworks view and a balcony facing the beautiful Lake Bryant. Sorry, I am just a tad excited even if it is 11 months away... Lol. Personal message me if you need help or have questions!

Yes that is where we ended up getting our reservations for, can't wait 26 days till we arrive!!!
You are going to love it. We were there in this past November and loved it. We loved all the little paths to the Alligator Bayou buildings. We were in building 17 and loved it a short walk to everything - south depot bus, main buildings, quiet pool and theme pool were all within a few minutes walk and the grounds are the best. Sometimes at night DH would say "I'll go get snacks." And I would say, "No I'll go - I want the walk." Sometimes we would all go as the kids loved to explore the "trails" as they called them and enjoyed leading the way.
