Horizons Memories

I wanted to start a thread about our memories of one of the best rides ever created at WDW.

My strongest memory of the ride is Christmas week in 1989. I was a teenager at WDW with my parents, brother and maternal grandmother. My brother, grandmother and I rode Horizons several times that trip as it was one of our favorite rides. The part we loved the most was choosing your ending. None of us could figure out how it worked but we loved trying each one over and over.

I was a Mesa Verde (Desert ending) fan, always was picking everyone's options for them...so we'd always get that one

Well, since I was little at the time, my first and most vivid memories were both at the beginning and end. First, I was so fascinated with the (overhead omnimover system) "upside-down cars." Then, I specifically remember both mine and my family's surprise at the choose your own ending sequence.

Now, as an adult, I still appreciate the overhead omnimover system, especially when viewing videos of the ride today. On other dark rides, the track is easily seen. In Horizons, there was literally no wasted space. The scene transitions were seamless to me. I love how the sets came right up to your ride vehicle, yet spanned out from there (or at least appeared to, I'm sure there were many illusions used) to prevent claustrophobia. You felt like you were in the family's home! I think that is just one of the many reasons why it stood out from the rest for me.

Me too! I always made my family pick that ending... I'm sure they were so tired of it!

I also remember being totally creeped out by the man on the moon.:lookaroun

I remember fighting with my mom over picking the ending.... she always picked desert and I always wanted to go under water.

Then I tortured her by doing the suit manipulation arm thingie like 5 times while she waited for me.

Horizons Endings

Can anyone please explain how the endings were projected, was it on individual screens per car, i can't remember. I only rode Horizons 4 or 5 times, 2 in 1987, 1 or 2 in 1990 and 1 in 1992, but now as I watch the video on youtube, i find it to be such a spectacular ride, the most complete, well thought out ride ever built by Disney. It was grand and inspiring in every way, it definitely was worth saving, it could have been refurbished instead of destroyed, Mission Space is an ok thrill ride, but it is old to me now, when they change it, not many people will remember it's first version, it's just not Grand like Horizons.
