Horizons and Spaceship Earth locations

I always wonder why they put a ride that scratched the surface of every Future World element in a building that was supposed to look like a spaceship when a communication ride is placed the main landmark ( the sphere), not to mention that is still one of the worlds most advance architecture. That confuses me and makes me wonder so much. It just seems that they should have been the opposite way around. I know I already made a Horizons thread and this will be my last thread about horizons forever. Really this is about both rides and location. Just covering my guard I see how hairy things get on this site .

Spaceship Earth was designed as the parks icon, ever since the hourglass layout developed in 1978. As such - the theme not coming into it - it was designed to be the anchor pavilion.

Horizons was developed too late for anything like that. It`s original design (Century3) was designed to fit where The Living Seas was finally built. Horizons was still being designed when the park was half completed.

Well, to add to what Martin said, there's a ton of symbolism in there, too. The Communication Ride (Now the Future Ride) was meant to be the centerpiece of EPCOT, seeing that "Communication is the basis of understanding", as Card Walker said at SSE's dedication and EPCOT Center's opening. Therefore, it was fitting to place SSE at the CENTER or the beginning of the park, because everything you would see in the ride itself, could be understood through communication and seen in the rest of EPCOT. Though the ride has changed since then, it still holds true. You see the cultures of the world converge for a better future. A marriage of FW and WS.

The same can be said for it's architecture. In FW, SSE is a Spaceship. It is of the future. In WS, it's viewed as a monument and a representation of our planet an the cultures aboard it.

I love EPCOT. :)

Even though Horizons is about the Future in general and unites all the concepts of Future World, Spaceship Earth is more deserving of being the icon of the park. As others have said, its purpose is (was) to show the people of the world coming together through communication to make the future a better place.

Horizons focused on the family dynamic, not mankind in general. It was all about how the technologies of Future World would personally affect our lives. In that sense its placement was correct since Spaceship Earth is a better thesis for the entire park.

Unfortunately the new SSE sort of abandons its concept during the descent and focuses on the individual, more like Horizons did, except without an ounce of inspiration. :brick:

Spaceship Earth has always been a popular ride the main reason for its popularity and long lines is its location in the front of the park. Another reason that Spaceship Earth is so popular is because it is located in the large geodesic sphere, which is a world famous landmark for the park.

That's very true, though the first part of the ride is still focused on society.

That holds VERY true for many new attractions that WDI does. It's no longer "We" or "Us" but "You". Hmm. I sense something big here...

Man, isn't that true! Everything new you hear from WDI is about making things more "personal" and interactive for each guest so its a "unique" experience. I say give me my mass entertainment of the masses back! :fork:

Agreed. The inclusiveness of the older way of appealing to the audience was much more moving that way. It felt as if EVERYONE had a stake in the future.

I think Vinyl Leaves talks about that. I'll have to dig my copy off of my desk....It's being used for research.
