Hong Kong too similar?

I've been wondering the past few weeks, with Hong Kong Disneyland coming along, is it just too similar to the other MK based parks to be enjoyable?

Hong Kong will not have Frontierland, so we can count out Splash or Big Thunder Mountains. But I think the rest of the park will mostly be "clones", which upsets me. After all, we'll probably have a few darkrides in Fantasyland, Small World, Mad Tea Party, etc. and in Tomorrowland, Space Mountain, a Buzz Lightyear ride, etc. In other words -- CLONES.

Does anyone else think Hong Kong will be no big deal?

It will be no big deal because it is being built on a fraction of the budget and space of the other parks, really. The fact that it will be clones has little to do with it. In fact, I remember a post awhile back listing the attractions that will be there, and there won't be many, compared to WDW/TDLR/DL/DLRP. So I think if anything, the park's problem won't be unoriginality, but just lack of attractions in general.

HKDL would be better if it WAS like the other Magic Kingdoms. Talk about lame - its following the route of DLP WDS and DCA. No PotC. No BTM. no IASW. No Splash. No HM. A castle like California. They do have some shops though!

Aren't all the Magic Kingdoms just clones?
The only one that slightly differed was DLP's discoveryland. And all they did was theme the clones differently.
I guess if there is a silver lining it's that while the rumoured Phase 2 attractions will be clones but they will have different takes on them then what we are used to.

From what I understand, HKDL is much more than a Theme Park, its to get China's people familiar with the Disney brand. I think everyone associates Disney parks with a Magic Kingdom, so not to build a Magic Kingdom would be silly. The park is very small, and seems sparse, but Disneyland and Disney World were when they first opened. Lets hope they work on phase two as soon as the park opens.

We all moan about "clones" but did we moan when DLRP was opened or WDW for that matter. I agree, HKDL needs something that the others don't..... oh hang on, it has gardens!!!!

Well, no, not really... I noticed MAJOR differences when I visited. First off, Fantasyland and Discoveryland are by far superior to their sister counterparts! The whole story of Frontierland is totally different. The dark rides in Fantasyland are all upgraded. The castle is very different from the other castles. Space Mountain rules all others. Most of Discoveryland wasn't cloned until the late 90s. Timekeeper was original back then. The park is much more organized in it's layout. PotC is superior to anything out there. As you can see, DLP's MK is more than just a glamerous Disneyland clone.

Honk Kong is poorly planned. They're getting the old Tomorrowland and Fantasyland, and everything there is a direct clone. Not one single original attraction.. :( The scale is the same as DLC's scale which imo is way too small for todays crowds.. Heck, the place is so small and thin in the attraction department Disney is hopng visitors take their time to enjoy the scenery.. :brick:

Well, I hate to say it, but Disney is doing what Disney does best these days. Giving you the minimum bang for all of your bucks, because they know no matter how bad things get, people will always show up at the gates to empty their wallets. It's Disney. Sure, it's not like how it used to be, but it's Disney!!

I feel that Disney will simply coast on their name brand in China. Why go all out and build an awesome park when we can give them the bare minimum attractions and just sit back and let the money roll in? Disney is counting on this. They're counting on the fact that the Chinese will be THRILLED to have any kind of Disney park there and they'll just have to make do with the attractions they will have for a few years before expanding again. Definitely corporate thinking, but definitely NOT true Disney thinking.
