Hollywood Studios on May 4th (Star Wars Day)

Hey guys,

I haven't been to WDW in 10 years, though I've been to other parks in the meantime with my fiancé.

We have an upcoming trip in May for two weeks and we're debating whether to spend May 4th at Hollywood Studios.
We are both Star Wars fans - we watch all movies and shows (incl. the animated ones) - but we wouldn't consider ourselves actual die hard fans.
We wouldn't dress up and join fan gatherings or such, but if there's something special expected to be offered by Disney, we would consider spending the day at the park. Our biggest fear is that it'll be super crowded which might deter from enjoying the park.

What do you guys think?

Disney has in the past had special merchandise available which fans grab up quickly, thats one reason to book the park. Theres always special SW themed snack items for sale. They have occasionally had some SW things going on that makes it beneficial to be in the park for the 4th, but IMHO they havent really gone all out and made it as special as they probably should. And I remember a few years ago there were May the 4th be with you fans that gathered on their own dressed up to celebrate. Its going to be crowded whether its the 4th or another day. As a fan go ahead and go.

T-shirts and cupcakes. That's about it.
This.^^^

Disney has done some special things in the past that went beyond merchandise for May the 4th, but it is a different Disney now. The current Disney could not even bother to do anything past merch and cupcakes for the 50th Anniversary of MK so I would not expect anything more than that for Star Wars day.

I bet it would be crowded.. not due to anything disney does but the fans. So many star wars fans celebrate the 4th that I assume they just throw their own fun, and alot of people will want to be in batuu for the 4th. So it will prob be very very crowded in batuu.. the rest of the park might be pretty empty though.

really wish disney would bring back star wars weekends and bring in celebrities and special events.. but honestly i dont know if they have the room now.

I miss the days when HWS was filled with SW actors and special stuff.
Why did they get rid of this. It drew huge crowds.

Because after the newer films came out they didn't want the first films to be relevant and focus on all the new characters..Look at how they tie in landing in Batuu on Star Tours and why you see the new characters throughout the black spire outpost, RoTR and MFSR and the Star cruiser..

Plus no major Star Wars movie to promote. I guess they could promote The Mandalorian since they just got finished with season 1.5.

They could promote the Obi-Wan series since it premieres at the end of the month. All of the heavy Star Wars news would be coming at Celebration at the end of the month, anyways.

Then maybe bring in the new actors? It's almost like they forgot the place is called a studios....oh wait they forgot that a long time ago.

it drew huge crowds.... theres no room for parades or huge crowds now for one. And it cost money, that really didnt make them more than if they didnt do it.
Official disney reason...
the opening of the Star Wars Launch Bay Disney mentioned that since this attraction gave fans a way to celebrate Star Wars every day, the long-running Star Wars Weekends event was found to be superfluous and was officially cancelled

I miss the hoopla! Not sure how much truth to what I had heard back in the day. Anyhow, what I heard went like this -- when Lucas and team were at WDW to discuss the sale, Kennedy did not like the way Disney was portraying the IP, she did not like the Interspace Hoopla one bit -- anyway, as part of the sale, Disney was schooled a bit on how to treat the IP -- heck, they even brought Kennedy on board -- I do believe that was the last Star Wars Weekend and they stopped once Disney acquired said IP.

The timeline really does not work. Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012 and the last SWW was in 2015. If Kennedy had such an issue with elements of it, you would expect it to be canned by 2013 at the latest.

The "official" reason for no more Star Wars Weekends was that SW:GE would create a larger daily presence of Star Wars in the parks.

Part of your story is true, although im not sure who was involved. But when star tours was big and star wars was really becoming a part of the parks you saw mickey as luke and donald as han and they had pvc characters tshirts matchbox cars etc... after awhile there was a discussion that they were mishandling the IP and all of that stuff was yanked. Personally I thought it was cute and a fun little toy.. but they thought it over disneyfied star wars.

It’s a Wednesday…and I don’t expect the hardcore fans to descend on Mehland in anykind of a special trip
