All of the Haunted Mansion portraits from the ride (with the 'moving' eyes) are featured right now on the back lot tour over at Disney-MGM Studios Not sure if anyone had seen them yet. They are in the paint shop portion of the tour.

Does this mean there still keeping them in the ride? Are they just putting them there temporarily? Or is that just there stop before they get to mousesurplus. Whatever the reason it at least gives you something to look at while on the Back lot Tour since half of it is gone now.

I would imagine that they would proably just re-touch them, but then again I dunno i mean does anyone know if the ones at DL were replaced?

This would seem to mean they're being replaced (I'm sure just with new versions of the same paintings, of course). Since MGM isn't an actual working studio, I don't see why the paintings would be moved to an onstage area there if they were going to be retouched and reused in the ride. Seems like they'd keep them backstage to do that kind of work. So I'm going to guess this means fresh, new paintings...the old ones were showing wear anyway.

Not the first time they've had ride props being retouched on the Backlot Tour. The Figment animatronics for JIIWF (which were all from the original) were also fixed up over there.

I'm fairly certain that the Balloons from The Land were also repainted in the Backlot Tour, so it certainly isn't unheard of. However, from almost everything I've heard, it seems they WON'T be coming back. I've been told a version of Disneyland's Changing Portrait Corridor is to replace the Sinister Eleven. Of course, you can never be too certain. We'll have to wait until September to see.

I know I would certainly LOVE to see some pictures of the portraits as they appear in the Backlot. I wonder how "pretty" they are in normal lighting . . .

can someone tell me what the Sinister 11 is?

At the begining of WDW's Haunted Mansion ride, you go by 11 portraits whose eyes follow your vehicle. Most of them are based on old Changing Portraits concepts, though the Medusa and April December Changing Portraits are included as well.

I saw the balloons being repainted when we went on it (can't remember the year), but they were there like you said.

Oh, I stand corrected then--I didn't know that the Backlot Tour served any use anymore. So yeah, then I guess they could just be getting touch-ups. But we have heard rumors about the paintings being replaced, so...who knows, I guess.

I'm gonna have to take out some loans if these things get on mouse surplus. I have been dying to find something similar to these ANYWHERE. If the real deal becomes available.... rut row.

If the rumor is true that the current portrait hall is being changed to DL's changing portraits (which, in my mind, seems like it would be very cool actually moving down that hallway in a Doombuggy with lightning in the windows on one side and the portraits on the other) I wonder if the "eyes follow you" portraits will be relocated elsewhere in the Mansion. Maybe the Master Gracey portrait room, or in the rather dull Doombuggy loading area. Even the exit hallway would be neat (or the rumored gift shop???).

The "eyes follow you" portraits, as well as the staring busts, seem to work much better if you're walking around them rather than riding by. In DL's portrait hall (which is part of the doombuggy load area) you walk past the staring busts (they don't have the library there). As you walk by at your own speed, the faces follow you. If you back up, squat down, or stand on your toes, their eyes follow your movements. In the current MK library, the heads turn at the same speed as your Doombuggy, losing the effect.

I would imagine putting the "eyes follow you" portraits in a walking area of the Mansion would make the effect work much better.

I was there in January of 2005 and the Land Balloons were being painted on the backlot tour. At that same time It's A Small World was being renovated and I remember seeing a piece of the set being painted there as well. So it is possible for the 11 paintings from HM to be repaired there. But I've heard that they are going to replace the pictures with the eyes with the pictures that change like at Disneyland California and Paris. Either way, it would be cool to see any prop from the Haunted Mansion outside it's home....kind of creepy actually.

I was temporarlly placed in the seamtress room over on the backlot tour. It's kinda creepy when you're trying to concentrate and a tram goes by. It's a real working facility though. All costume repairs for MGM are done in there as well as some repairs from around the "world". And the tech facility next door does the repairs for many attraction props and other prop upkeep. So, it does serve a purpose.

I don't like the sounds of this.. Are they possibly putting in new portraits?
From what I've gathered, they might be putting new portraits in. The old ones would be replaced by the changing ones in DL.

This isn't the one found in DL, but it gives you a good idea of what they do:

edit: or watch this video and go to 2 min. and you'll see them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJt1TwqceYY

Images painted on film scrim (sp?) then lit from the front. As the the light goes off and turns one on behind it. Thus lighting up the next image and makeing the first all but disappear. As far as I know, this is how the portraits still use this trick, but could of changed by now.
