Besides, why settle for an animatronic when you can have the real thing?

I was thinking the same thing. It's Florida. There are real "Al E. Gators" (Fantasia refrence) everywhere.

For what it's worth, DL's version also has a roadrunner. He can be seen at 4:33 in this video, behind the possum family; he watches Brer Rabbit on the hand cart that goes back and forth over the flume, moments before passing by the alligator in question. I realize this isn't the best video, but it's tough to find any that show him, since it's such a quick moment in the ride

I assume that we all know that DL's Splash Mountain recycled tons of AA's from America Sings, right? That's why they have so many random animals that don't necessarily make fit the scenes or story, and why WDW and TDL have fewer AA's. TDL has a few more AA's than WDW because they always presumably have bigger budgets, but both of those have fewer than DL because they were all built from scratch. Only the Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear AA's were created specifically for DL's Splash.

In America Sings, the roadrunner can be seen during Home on the Range, sliding into place on the left side of the dog around 7:50. The alligator is from the See You Later Alligator bit at 14:50 (not to be confused with the Swamp Boys singing Polly Wolly Doodle at 2:20 who were placed in the finale scene in all 3 versions of Splash Mountain)

Yup, the best way to "handle" an alligator is to beat it with the end of a pool leaf skimmer. lol
