Hilton Head in February

So we have some points left over and figured we would use them on Hilton Head, its about 10 hours away so with two drivers not a big deal for a weekend get away. We are staying two nights. Any info/advice? do we bother cooking/grilling or eat out? Do we just hand on property with the resort activities?

Hi there,
Since you are going in February, it will be too cold for the beach and probably the pool. But there's still plenty to do. You can walk around the resort, there's shuffleboard, there's horseshoes, you can go over to the beach and walk...Do you like biking? There's a lot of bike trails around the resort area, and you may ride on the beach (as long as you get the bikes from Disney. Some of the other vendors don't allow it). We usually lay around the resort and relax. We make a December trip out of it every year.

If you don't eat out at least once, you are seriously missing out. I would recommend Old Oyster Factory, the Crazy Crab, or the Salty Dog if you are over in Sea Pines. Be aware that you will have to pay parking to go over to Sea Pines. Crazy Crab has two locations, one in Sea Pines and one towards the other end of the island. The one that is not in Sea Pines looks like a dump, but it's excellent. Trust me. And it might be a tad cool for grilling, plus you have to get charcoal.

As someonewho lives in the area and works at a resort on Hilton Head (not the Disney Resort), I'd say you should definitely eat out. There's some great restaurants/bars that are walking distance from the hotel in the Shelter Cove area. If you want a great restaurant on the water I'd recommend the Skull Creek Boathouse, it's about a 10 minute drive from the Disney resort and has some of the best views of the sunset. If you like Tapas, i'd recommend a place called Daniels in the Coligny circle area. They've got a great and diverse menu and a really nice bar.
If you're going to do any cooking, a new Kroger grocery store opened just a couple days ago that's only about 2 minutes away from the resort. Hope you enjoy your stay.

There are a number of good ideas on HHI in other threads here already, so be sure to use the search feature. We went to the Smokehouse for southern BBQ when we were there last summer. It was excellent.

Make sure you have a good map with you while on the island. There are no lit signs, so if you don't have a good idea of where you're going, you may never find it. It's the only place that I've been to a Wal-Mart, and the foliage was so thick that you couldn't see the front of the store from the back of the parking lot. It was really nice, but made finding your way around a little difficult.

Very good point. If you have a GPS, I would bring it. Or use your phone. Or Google Maps.

I'm no expert but we visited HHI over the MLK holiday weekend in January '13. Temps got into the upper 60s and it was quite pleasant. Needed jackets on the beach, though. We rented bicycles from the resort and rode down to the beach. Kids did a couple activities in the Community Hall. Campfire at the resort. Played mini-golf down the road. We mostly ate in our villa but there are plenty of good restaurants in the area.

Week before we arrived it was in the mid-to-upper 70s. Too bad that weather couldn't have held out a few days longer.

Overall I'd say the odds are against summer-like temps but you never know. Check that forecast and hope for the best!
