Hexed (WDAS - 2026)

This sounds like the kind of thing you might just spit out if you were trying to come up with an example of a generic sounding animated film on the fly.

Is this part of their male demographic focusing initiative? If so, I'm betting against it working.

For a moment I thought the title said it was the HD remaster of Hexen.

I'm not impressed; the premise sounds like they're stripping stuff like The Owl House, Onward, Turning Red, and Elio for parts. (Very heteronormative, male-skewing parts at that.) It's hard to believe this was the best they could come up with for what's going to be the last original WDFAS film for a while. And no word on who's doing the music or voices?

And exactly how is doing that wrong if it's supported by an audience large enough to make it financially successful ? The boneyard is full of "new exciting perspectives" that lacked paying audiences.

So wait, Hollywood taking concepts from other shows, movies, and other sources to make something new. Hmm, tell me where I've heard of that happening before, its right at the tip of my tongue.....

I think it all depends on the execution. The premise itself doesn't seem exciting, but we shall see how it turns out.

I think The A.V. Club put the issue with this announcement best: "We're sure Hexed has more to offer beyond its basic "awkward kid with a Type-A mom finds out he's magic" logline because… it has to, right?"

If they want people to be excited about the project and not just notice all the stuff it (intentionally or not) resembles, why not bring up what makes it different from those? Is it going to be a musical? Who's doing the voices? What are the stakes exactly?

Interesting! And seriously guys, quit complaining! We don't even know what the movie is going to be like. Give them time. And I'll try not to get my hopes if it's hand drawn animated. Of course, I could hope if it's a 2D/3D hybrid animated film!

Looking around Bluesky, it's pretty sad that the response to this announcement is mostly about whether or not this is knocking off The Owl House or not. If the movie's only a year and change away, there should have been a lot more to the reveal than just that logline and one piece of concept art (that's raised futile hopes of this being a 2D film) that likely won't reflect the film's final look. It reminds me of how little was given of Wish with its formal announcement in Sep. 2022, and we all remember how that turned out (and how things went for Strange World before that). As I said above, no news on who's voicing the leads even? Or if it's a musical?

(There's also the issue of its release date - with Avengers: Doomsday looking to cost the moon, any promotional efforts for Hexed will end after its first weekend so Disney can focus on hyping that up. If it doesn't do Moana 2 numbers out of the gate, this might end up being the next Elio.)

Since it’s being directed by two people who were involved with Zootopia, Encanto, and Moana 2 I’m not really worried.

Sure it could turn out bad, but it also has the same chance of turning out good, even real good. I’m more leaning into it being good, given who is involved.

Also it’s obvious they want to slow drip out the information such as voice cast in order to manage expectations given what happened with Wish, ie they are gun shy and cautious. So it’s not surprising they gave out only little teasers of information. No real reason to read anything into it beyond that at this point.
