We are planning on visiting wdw in may 2013. We normally stay at por but as it is our 2 daughters first visit we have decided to make it extra special by staying at akl. We are planningon booking a standard roomdue to cost but as it isour wedding anniversary while we are there i am thinking of suprising my husband and upgrading to a savannah view room. As i am planning this as a suprise i wondered if i would be able to upgrade at check in in the hotel or if it has to be done in advance. Can anyone help?

Definitely do it in advance. You will have to pay the fee for upgrade, of course but savannah view rooms are a hot commodity and sell out. The odds of getting it at check in are slim.

Ivory Tower Squabble EST 2011. WINDMILL SURVIVOR
We booked a standard room. It was 4th of July weekend and no standard rooms were available. Disney at no cost upgraded us to a pool view. We were in the wing that was off the gift shop area and pretty far down the hallway. We had an amazing view from our balcony of both the pool, which entertained the kids while we were in our room and were also able to see some of the animals that came to the observation deck behind the pool.
Win! Win!

I did love AKL but there were a couple of draw backs that kinda took me off guard. The standard rooms are almost the same size as POR. They are a tad wider but not much. We had a queen bed and a bunk bed, so the actual length of the room was the same or maybe less than POR. The bath area took up more space than it does at POR and doesn't have the curtain for changing privacy.

The other thing that took me off guard was how long it took to travel to some of the parks. OK for young ones when there are seats available, late night, packed buses, it was a long ride for the little one. 12 miles is a haul for little legs at night from the MK.

Kids really liked all the pick'ns from the counter service resturant that opened right into the pool area, a nice bonus especially with the refill cup by the pool.
