Help with Aloha dinner show

I made reservations for the Spirit of Aloha dinner show for September. I mentioned the dinner to several people and they say the show is boring and the food is poor at best, sometimes cold. The wait staff are rude and very un-Disney like. We wanted to take our girls ages 8 & 11 to a fun dinner, but I am worried this may NOT be the right one. Any suggestions would really help before we end up soooooooooo disappointed. Thanks

There have been a few reviews of the new show/dinner. Many people disliked it while others loved it. We have decided to skip it and to continue with the Hoop Dee Do Review in Fort Wilderness.

If you do a quick search I'm sure you can come up with the past threads/discussions.

I actually enjoyed the Spirit of Aloha show. I liked the old show better, but the new one is still entertaining. I thought the food was good and our server was wonderful. That being said, I still like the Hoop Dee Doo better, hands down. I don't have children, but it seems to me that kids would enjoy the Hoop Dee Doo more than the Spirit of Aloha...I know I did!

IMHO, it's not worth the money or time. I wouldn't put my 6-year old daughter through it, and I doubt she'd either sit through it or like enough of the food to justify the investment.

My experience: I saw it in October 2003 with friends who had seen it before and totally loved it. We had a car and drove over with our kids (4 and 1 at the time) and they used Disney transport and it took them over an hour to get there. When we arrived, DD was asleep and the CMs were pretty snooty about us being early and we'd have to wait in the lobby area.

So, long story short, the food was okay (I'm sensitive to pineapple so I didn't try everything), our server was okay, the first half of the show was okay and the second half spectacular. Our friends' daughter was very disappointed not to be chosen to dance with the cast (she had done it the time before). It also rained throughout the show so that might have changed the staging a bit. Also, they seated us on the far right side and way down front, so we all had to crane our necks to see the show at all.

I haven't seen Hoop-de-Doo so I can't compare. I will say that our family was disappointed in the Aloha show. I felt that it just wasn't good value for the amount we paid, though if the kids were bigger and ate more I might have felt better about it. I should also add that our friends still think it's one of the best shows Disney has to offer.

I've not recently been to the show, but I would say that Hoop de do is the way to go with kids.

This show is very hands on and EVERYONE gets to participate.

I prefer the Ohana Dinner rather than the Spirit of Aloha Show. For our special resort dinners, we choose Ohana, followed by a MK visit (typically on EMH night), Chef Mickey's for a Character Breakfast, and California Grille for a dinner. I enjoyed the Hoop De Doo quite a bit as well, and would reccomend it, though transportation-wise its a bit of a haul.

I agree with Zoot74. I like the dinner show but prefer the old one. The story line is a little cheesy but I still think the dancing is excellent. Especially the fire-twirling man towards the end. The food is so-so. The salad, rice and veggies are good, but not too thrilled with the quality of the chicken or ribs. I have never found the waitstaff to be rude. I like it for sentimental reasons and for the dancing. I would suggest the Hoopty-Du instead. This show embraces it's corniness :) I am sure with the age of your kids that they will love it.

I guess everybody's experience is different.

We had just arrived that afternoon. We were staying at the CSR and drove to the Poly. Flash the DDE creds, and voila, we’re in the lobby! We were a little early. It had been raining on and off, so they were checking people in near the boutique in the main building. We did some shopping, checked out the lounge – there was a neat Polynesian-style lounge singer playing there, then checked out the pools and the beach (it had stopped raining). Then we walked on down to Luau Cove. Had our pics taken, were seated and started on salad and drinks.

Salads and bread was delicious. Food was pretty good – standard chicken and ribs with a poly flair. But our waiter brought plenty of food and drink – whatever we asked for extra was provided. The service was really top-notch. And the flaming/smoking volcano trays that the dessert came out on (all at once coordinated with music!) were pretty cool.

But let me tell you, folks, the show was fabulous. I’d highly recommend it. It has a sort of story behind it – a girl who comes home to the islands after being away on the mainland for a while. But the story is just an excuse for a fabulous show. And they have breaks in the show timed perfectly so you get a chance to eat and order more drinks, etc., and not miss anything. The grand finale with the fire dancers was the best of its kind I had ever seen, live or on film/TV. The costuming was great. And there was some kid-participation hula, and a chance for couples to dance to the Hawaiian Wedding Song. And it was a good long show – a couple of hours – but not too long.

And I saved over $30 with my DDE, with the $7 value for the valet parking, the card nearly paid for itself the first night.

What a great way to start a vacation!

My DDs loved the show. They are 11 and 7. The 7 yo loves ribs, and could eat several racks of them if I let her. She also loves pineapples. They are on the table with the salad at the beginning, and she ate them all (leaving only a few for the rest of us), and asked for more, and our server brought a big bowl. Our server never let us run out of beer and wine or ribs or chicken without ever being asked. As I said earlier, the food was nothing spectacular, but it was pretty good, anyway, and plenty of it.

Also, my kids are really into Lilo and Stitch, so they were looking forward to a Poly themed show for weeks. They especially liked the fire dancer (because that's what Nanni's boyfriend David does!).

It's a shame that it rained for inafog's show. I think the staging must, in fact, have been changed a bit, because ALL the kids were invited up to learn a hula (maybe even more than once), and they had neat hanging paper ornaments (of the humuhumunukunukuapuaa fish) that the cast held over the kids heads and surprised them. And all the couples go to dance to the Hawaiian Wedding Song. If it were raining, we would have been doing that stuff in the rain. So maybe that's why. Plus we had exactly the opposite experience with the CMs. Everyone was really nice, and we got alohas and smiles and leis all over the place! And the service was great.

As for value, $50 ($25 for kids) without the DDE is a little steep, but it is WDW for crying out loud - nothing is cheap. Considering I spent $24 ($13 for kids) at Akershus for lunch, where DD7 ate a few pieces of cheese and half a PBJ, saw a few princesses, and it was over in less than an hour, compared to nearly two hours of entertainment, I think we got more value out of SoA.

HDDR was the same price, and I didn't get the DDE, because it doesn't work for the early show. And we felt rushed at HDDR. There are three shows each night, versus two for SoA. And the food was better at SoA, although the main course was about the same with a different sauce  . At least at HDDR, the rain won't affect the show at all. I don't know why they don't have a covering over the show area at Luau Cove. This never made sense to me.

Anyway, I just had a cup of coffee, so I'm sorry to go on like this, but just in summary, I'm not trying to invalidate everyone else's experience, it's just that we had a really good one at SoA.

What about doing Mickey's Backyard BBQ at Ft. Wilderness instead?
Yeah! It's cheaper, longer, and my kids had an absolute ball when they were there (two years ago). So did we! And it's serve-yourself, so you go at your own pace without having to worry about getting anyone's attention. Much more informal. Picnic benches and no reserved seating, but the kids sit on the ground around the dance floor for the latter part of the show anyway. A very different experience.

I have done the Aloha twice and have to agree with those who suggest the Hoop-de-do. The Aloha is tepid as a show...as are the food and drinks. The indoor locale of the Hoop-de-do helps with the food (Better than the Aloha at a basic level, IMHO) and the show, corny jokes and all, is just better!
