Questions concerning this IRC thingy…

I have a few questions surrounding this #disney-central IRC thingy whatever-the-heck it is…

I’m not sure if any of my questions have been answered before in previous threads, but I’m much too tired to peruse hundreds of pages that I would find in a search, and I really need just some straight answers to these questions…

If anybody could help by answering these questions, I’d be very thankful.

Anyway, question number

ONE) What program is best to use if I would want to use IRC to download any audio or video files of the Disney theme parks? I have heard mention of the “mirc” program…
Is this program best? Concerning “mirc”… it is shareware, i.e. you get it free for 30 days and then you have to register it for $20… But… do you *really* have to register it? I.E. if you don’t register it after 30 days will the “mirc” program stop working, or worse yet, crash my computer? Is paying the $20 really *necessary*? (not that I would try to cheat and steal this program, just that if it really does cost $20, I’ll have to have somebody give me $20… you know… Are there any other programs besides “mirc” that are really *free* and just as good?

2.) Is this IRC thingy based on a points system… i.e. you only get to download as many bytes as you upload? Or do you get unlimited downloads without having to upload a single file? (I would upload things, but I just don’t have anything anybody DOESN’T have already… :))

3.) Concerning an IRC program… (like mirc)… Would an “mirc”-like program use up a lot of memory on a computer? Does it allow you to multitask as efficiently as if though you were running AIM? Or even worse, has it ever caused ANYBODY’s computer any damage whatsoever? (I have an expensive new computer and I don’t want it to crash or be damaged in any way)…

4.) Am I correct that Popkid’s website will tell me everything I need to know concerning how to download files after I have downloaded and installed a program like “mirc”?

5.) Am I correct that files are arranged according to the person who uploaded them, and then arranged according to what park they come from? Or is it like a big hodgepodge of files arranged in no particular order? How are the files arranged? Can you effectively “Browse” through the files spontaneously or do you HAVE TO KNOW exactly the file name of the one particular file you are looking for and search for it?

6.) Is this IRC thingy p2p? i.e. can I only download a file if the person who has it and online and connected to IRC? Or are the files sent to some dedicated server for easy access anytime, regardless of if the person who uploaded them is online or not?

7.) Is there a great deal of MASTER QUALITY Disney theme park audio files (mp3s) on IRC thingy? Or are they mostly live recordings?

8.) Is downloading fast and simple? If I have a DSL internet connection, will the files I want to be downloaded be downloaded at DSL speeds? Or slower? Or at a set rate? Is a downloading utility part of the “mirc” software? i.e. is it built into the program? Or would I be able to use, say, RealDownload to download files?

Any other information you guys can give me would be much appreciated. Once again, Perhaps some of these questions have been answered in other threads, but I just really want to know the straight answers to these questions…

Thank you in advance to all who will reply to my queries with helpful information! :D

mIRC is free....it might yell at you saying its gone past the 30 day period, but lots of others do, like WinZip

No, there's no point system. Just a while to figure out how to use it first ;)

mIRC shouldn't damage your computer. Especially if you get a new version.

IRC is the oldest form of p2p, so yes, a user must be online for you to recieve files from.

As all downloading goes, it depends on both your connection, and the connection from where you are downloading from.

Mirc is definitely the best on Windows. It's shareware, but I been using it for years and never actually paid for it. the program continues to work exactly the same after 30 days. Nothing different.

2.) Is this IRC thingy based on a points system… i.e. you only get to download as many bytes as you upload? Or do you get unlimited downloads without having to upload a single file? (I would upload things, but I just don’t have anything anybody DOESN’T have already… :))

Unlimited download.. the only crux is that you wait in a line (just like Disney) if there are alot of people queing up files to download. The channel hasn't been very busy at all lately, so you'll likely hop right on and not even wait in any line.

3.) Concerning an IRC program… (like mirc)… Would an “mirc”-like program use up a lot of memory on a computer? Does it allow you to multitask as efficiently as if though you were running AIM? Mirc doesn't take up hardly any memory at all. I leave it running days on end minimized. No problem whatsoever. Just like AIM as far as mmeory resources. it's very tame.

4.) Am I correct that Popkid’s website will tell me everything I need to know concerning how to download files after I have downloaded and installed a program like “mirc”?

Yes. he's got a decent tutorial on what to do as long as you follow his instructions/pictures exactly. Don't skip anything.

It's a combination of hodgepodge and organized. Popkid told me last week he was going to make a concerted effort to move files around into logical folders, so people could find stuff easier. I believe he has started the process as alot of files in the uploads folder are missing.

As far as actively browsing the easiest way to do is to install Mirc to c:\invision2 and then install the invision2.0 program in the same folder (C:\invision2). Invision2.0 makes your IRC experience so much easier and intuitive. Once configured properly you simply type a trigger in the channel window (like !dizaudio) and it invokes the Invision2.0 program. You will see a list of files and then all you have to do is double click on them to start downloading or to add yourself on the queue. Do not worry if the window closes in 30 seconds. This is normal behavior and as long as you queued a file for download, just stay in the channel (you can minimize Mirc) and when your turn is up, the file will automatically start downloading. I can get you a link to download invision2.0 if you're interested.

6.) Is this IRC thingy p2p? i.e. can I only download a file if the person who has it and online and connected to IRC? Or are the files sent to some dedicated server for easy access anytime, regardless of if the person who uploaded them is online or not?

No P2P.. just Popkid and a few other guys with dedicated irc servers. The files are stored on those guy's computers and are always available as long as they are connected to irc. Another side benefit to Invision2.0 is that you can share your own files if you would like.

7.) Is there a great deal of MASTER QUALITY Disney theme park audio files (mp3s) on IRC thingy? Or are they mostly live recordings?

I should know, but don't really pay attention to the audio as I am mostly interested in park video footage. I think a good mix of both live and album-type audio is available.

Popkid serves on a T1 Internet connection, so it generally fast.. maybe 50Kbps or more depending on how many people are connected to the computer (he hosts other non-DIsney stuff too). You can't use RealDownload to download from irc i don't think, but Invision2.0 will make downloading a piece of cake. The people that complain about entering command lines to download files haven't tried invisision2.0 which makes it as easy as clicking.

I hope this will clear up the questions pretty good. Feel free to ask more if you need to.

I gotta tell ya everyone, in the past 3 days, (using mIRC, with Invision2.0) I was able to download all of Epcot, the Studios, and Animal Kingdom audio files. It's super fast, especially with invision.:)

I wouldn't leave IRC running for more than a few hours at a time. I did this, and my cable company capped my bandwidth at 8kbps for uploading too much.

Here ya go:

Invision 2.0 build 2520

As far as leaving IRC running.. as long as you are not serving/sharing anything your provider shouldn't limit your bandwidth. Also it is up to your provider. I have served before and never had a problem with Insight limiting my bandwidth or anything. I had to limit my own bandwidth cause when you upload on cable and it uses the full pipe, your download speeds will suffer.
