Cape May Cafe is one of our favorites. We once went with a group of 7 and it was so much fun! (For breakfast)
Hollywood and Vine is fabulous for breakfast as well but the 9 yr old might not like the Disney Junior characters. I haven't been there for lunch so I can't comment on that one...

I haven't done the breakfast at hollywood and vine like belle2013 has but dinner there was one of the worst we've ever had on property. If the kids are really big into disney jr. then for that reason alone you may still want to do it but believe me your not going for the food to that one. I've really liked brown derby and the wave. They are more adult like what you think of in a non theme park restaurant but all of disney's venues are kid friendly. I have never eaten at cape may but my sister and her fiance loved their dinner there. I'd say look at what park you will be in that day, or if you'll be in a park at all, and check out the menus. That way you have an idea of what you're getting into food wise and you can eliminate as much excess travel as possible.

Oh and if it's a dhs day you're looking for a venue remember the boardwalk area resorts have a lot to offer in terms of food too.

THe H&V breakfast is decent for buffet food but I have heard some negatives about lunch and dinner...I personally think Cape May has a VERY good buffet, a tad above the rest of the character buffets and 1900 Park Fare is close behind at dinner and has characters at dinner time. We always eat at Sci Fi if we are at HS for the day. We like the atmosphere and the burgers and the steak are decent, not great but decent. Always had a good server there too. If we want a really good meal and the budget is no object then Flying Fish is probably our favorite signature currently and seemed to be kid friendly the one time I took the kids at ages 7 & 6. Our favorite non signature is Ohana. So those are my suggestions

Sci Fi if you want to stay at HS
Flying Fish if you want to do signature
1900 Park Fare if you want buffet with characters
Ohana if you want great appetizers and lots of meat
Saana if you want to put the kids in the babysitter place at AKL and eat Indian food.. ( I just added this one because honestly some of the best Indian food I have eaten)

I like the food at Cape and with young kids, it isn't a quiet restaurant, a plus. Everyone will love the dessert selection.

Out of the listed options we've only tried:
Brown Derby: We liked it, but truth be told there wasn't anything that really blew us away. The theme isn't as outlandish, but it's still well done. Restaurants in the parks sometimes don't feel as 'fancy' as you sometimes wish they would, but this one does a good job here. The grapefruit cake was amazing awesome.
The Wave: We changed our plans mid-day and The Wave was a last-minute meal. It isn't a must-do now, but it we're definitely glad we tried it. We'd do it again for sure, especially as a fall-back option. The food was really good, but there's no signature dish. The quiet/mellow atmosphere is a nice break.

It sounds like you're looking for DHS-accessible options. You might want to try Beaches and Cream (Boardwalk area, accessible via boat from DHS) if you're ok with Burgers/Sandwiches and ice cream, it'll definitely be a hit with the kids.
If you're looking for more general hints: Boma is my number one suggestion when you're looking for something unique, but still kid-friendly. It's a buffet that has both safe and adventurous options. Plus, everyone loves going to view the savannah pre/post dinner.

We loooove Cape May. Not only fabulous service but food was great at the buffet. It's also in great surroundings, the boardwalk is right there, the beach, plus you can walk to Epcot.

Have done both Cape May breakfast and dinner, both were great. No characters at dinner, but good food.
Brown Derby dinner - good, not necessarily worth the price. WDW still pushes it as a signature, but not on par with Jiko and others.
The Wave dinner - solid food, nice quiet change of pace.
Hollywood & Vine dinner - avoid at all costs. Food was meh at best. There were I think 12 tables full when we ate there. That alone should have thrown up warning signs when everything else was booked. For Disney Jr. fans, breakfast isn't bad, but avoid for dinner.

Anything but Hollywood & Vine. It's the one and only meal we've ever had at WDW that made me swear we'd never go back. It was a lackluster buffet in a loud cafeteria, offering uninteresting, under-seasoned, pedestrian dishes (melting Jell-O, greasy coleslaw, dry chicken nuggets, ziti so overcooked that the edges were crispy - really?), all served at the same tepid temperature. I can't remember the price per person, but if it was anything more than $5, we overpaid.
